im thinking the canon one my self but like i say i dont know much thanks.

£200 there abouts

I guess it might depend on what you shoot (in the main) or is it just general.

For general stuff I'd suggest an EF28-135 IS as the kit lens with more oomph! You should pick a good s/h copy up for around £180 ish.

I've got the Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 and it doesn't seem to bad for the price (I am a newbie so I'm not that clued up on lenses).
I got it with a bundled deal with my 450D.
The only thing I would say is that if you suffer from a bit of camera shake, as it's not an IS lens, it can be a bit of a pain to keep the camera still.
Personally I thought I was quite steady when using the kit lens, it was the lack of IS on the Tamron that proved me wrong :)

Have you considered the 'nifty fifty' (Canon 50mm f/1.8) ?
It's great little prime lens and I am finding that I use it quite a lot.

As suggested by Canon Bob, the EF28-135 IS has also been recommended to me as a good replacement for the kit lens and it's on my 'to buy list'.

never herd of the nifty 50, but i take it you cant zoom in or out??? if not then sorry but it be no good for me.

don't write off the primes (fixed focal lengths) off straight away man... they're not to everyone's cup of tea but the downside of the fixed focal is offset with the big phat max apertures and typically high sharpness. If you're unsure the Nifty is by far the best 'lens' to try with first before jumping into the more expensive stuff (cheap lens, can be sold very quickly without much loss - if any, see it as a rental cost if anything)

Ads :D

adsayer you beat me to it :D
xsjado-man, I've compared my portait shots taken with my nifty fifty and those taken with my kit lens.
The nifty fifty produces sharper shots when comparing the two.
You could go for the tamron 70-300mm and a nifty fifty and you should be able to squeeze both in with your £200 budget.

when you compare say something like the Canon 85mm f1.2L (which I'm a proud owner of), to the 50mm f/1.8. £60 is an incredible price really (or the 85L is a total rip off depending on which way you look at it  )
I still use the 50mm in anger and is a cracker when stopped down a tad. Had many great shots from it. To cast it aside before even trying one is a shame as it's a little gem.

Ignore - tiredness has got the better of me :D

I've got a brand new Canon 55-250IS like the on in your last link, I ordered one and my wife got me one for my birthday, its only ben fitted to the camera once never had any pics taken, all boxed, instructions and receipt from Camerbox.

Yours for £160 + postage.

Only prob' is that I am going on holiday tonight for two weeks........

I'm not a Canon user but, from what I've heard, the Tamron 70-300 is your best bet, especially as there appears to be a supply problem with your 4th choice. This would also leave enough in your budget to try out a nifty fifty. I have the Sony version and I absolutely love it. In fact I now use primes for about 75% of what I do.

if its a direct repalcement for the jit lens then the sigma 17-70 is a good lens - ithink you can get it for about your budget.
Once you have that put the kit lens on ebay like i did and you get some money back. - i got £69 iirc.

The reviews on this were excellent especially for the price as has the new IS which is meant to be much better. I was looking for one a few weeks ago but everywhere is out of stock.

If you think you need a longer telephoto I would look at either the Sigma 70-300 APO (£ 150 ish) or the Canon 55-200 IS.

Both are better than the Sigma 70-300 DG Macro (nonAPO version) or the Tamron 70-300
