what's the matter with some people?

You don't need to 15 hammer's, 7 saw's and titanium wall brackets to put up a shelf.

You do if you're as useless as me... Probably be best to have some contractors on stand by too incase the wall needs rebuilding.

Out and about today, I was taking shots with my 550D with the kit lens (18-55) (left my 55-250 at home as wanted wider landscape shots) and 2 fellas walked past me both with what looked like 5D 2/3 with L lenses (looked to be 3/400mm primes) now these blokes were obviously there shooting wildlife as they were camoflaged up to the hilt, and as they wandered past me I distinctly heard one say to the other "he'll never get any good shots with that piece of ****" leading to them both having a laugh at myself.

Now I know not all of us beginners can afford L telephoto lenses but was there any need for that? I can't stand people who look down their noses and assume they are amazing because they have the best kit!

Anyways rant over I'm sure it was nobody on here lol but that really bugged me!

Welcome to the world of photography. Hell, even forums like this are full of people like that - boring gearheads who only care about the tech. Ignore them.

If you look at this forum at any part of any day you will find that most people are in/viewing the equipment sub form. 50% of photography seems to be about the camera.

Sticks and stones . . by reacting you hand them all the power . . as a Martial Artist i have learnt that many people are far to vocal when it comes to others . . probably as a result of some defect in their own sad and sorry lives and this is what is commonly referred to as "misplaced anger ". . . people who do this kind of thing are counting on getting a reaction its how they justify themselves and by taking the bait you are forced to converse at their level on their terms and on their turf most probably because egos are fragile at best this is the reason why so many confrontations happen ! The general consensus is; pay no attention to what people say this is simply "noise" and probably their only weapon . .for some this weapon has been hohned to perfection and can stop many dead in their tracks resulting in complete and paralyzing capitulation Remember "Empty vessels make most noise" ive found that a smile goes a long way in diffusing potential situations "Gearheads" are found in all walks of life and as i now understand they to are resident in our circles . ignore them once they find you dont rise to the bait they will look elswhere like all bullies and cowards they simply want to subjugate and dominate the weak . . .forget this now they probably have . .

Going off on a tangent a bit but funniest thing i've seen was at Focus a few years ago, guy lugging around a D3 with a fair sized lens on it.. and while i'm standing next to them thinking what's the point of even bringing it in the first place the guy he's with (clearly non togger friend) says what does that do and points at the top dial, 'togger' says i don't know i just leave it on auto.

When I killed my 5DII, I spent a while shooting landscapes with the X10 compact.
I got a lot of leg pulling from my photobuddies but that stopped when they saw the results.
But they insisted I stop calling it my toy camera :D

My most bizarre encounter was while photographing sunrise in Snowdonia.
I'll admit X10 does look rather silly on the Manfrotto 055 and 410 geared head, but it is a very effective combination.
Another photographer arrived, gave me and my gear a real WTF look, ignored my cheery wave, jumped back into their car and drove off!

They were probably there with their 400 primes and their camo gear on... to photograph the swans. Because you can't get close to super friendly giant birds in normal clothes.

I've also seen some fantastic shots with the sub-£1000 mediocre quality lenses and some absolutely awful shots with long primes.

Anyhoo, my point being, screw them, they were probably making rubbish blurry uncomposed photos. :)

All the gear, no idea.....

You beat me to that one, Wayne!
Just ignore people like that, NickJoeWatson. Console yourself with the fact that they very probably haven't taken many great shots with their several thousand pound outfits, making each shot cost way too much.
Enjoy taking the photos YOU want to and using the kit you've chosen and can afford.

Never had this but it's good to start small, be humble and work your way up.

Being a good tog involves makeing your gear work hard and getting the most from it.

Anyway, whats with the 550D bashing, its and exceptionaly capable camera and even better when you factor in it's price. :D

When I've met a gear head who insists on telling me all about their gear and how much it cost, I tell them I shoot film. You can see the confusion wash over them before they wander away.

It's particularly effective if I'm carrying the T90 and 80-200mm f/4 L lens. ;)

Nothing wrong at all with the equipment you are using so do not in any way be put off by two @rs0les who can't even use the gear between their ears.
Unfortunately these type of morons exist in all walks of life. :shake:

Ignore them mate. Big lens, small.........:)

Probably jealous of you !!!!

I'd have taken of their lovely L lens and taken a dump on the sensor.

I'm lucky to own some very nice gear, but I wouldn't want to be considered a gear snob ;) I still like to shoot with 450D too

I don't have top gear, but met Matt on a forum meet at the NMA and he'd got the big sigma on. Let me try it on my 40D and so on. only in the cafe, but I am certain if I'd have said "can I take it outside for a bit" he would have said "Of course". If someone is lucky enough to be able to afford the gear, it doesn't mean they need to be a nob to those that can't. They could be like Matt (and no doubt, most other folks on here) and just be decent sorts of people.

Another instance, I needed to shoot a theatre show, and I knew my current cheapo lenses were not really up to the job. A bloke from my club (who obviously has a fair bit of money, retired, etc) lent me his 24-70 f2.8 L lens, with no questions asked. I had it for 2 weeks. Whilst he couldn't be called a gear-head, he did have some nice gear, and he lent me £1000 worth with no problem at all.
