Yes
Out and about today, I was taking shots with my 550D with the kit lens (18-55) (left my 55-250 at home as wanted wider landscape shots) and 2 fellas walked past me both with what looked like 5D 2/3 with L lenses (looked to be 3/400mm primes) now these blokes were obviously there shooting wildlife as they were camoflaged up to the hilt, and as they wandered past me I distinctly heard one say to the other "he'll never get any good shots with that piece of ****" leading to them both having a laugh at myself.

Now I know not all of us beginners can afford L telephoto lenses but was there any need for that? I can't stand people who look down their noses and assume they are amazing because they have the best kit!

Anyways rant over I'm sure it was nobody on here lol but that really bugged me!

It's nothing new, sadly. I've had it in the past. I've come across mouthy photographers with gear swinging out of them from every angle, almost sneering at my gear. It's happened to me on photo-walks I attended, and when the images where all uploaded to the group, it was mine, among others that were chosen for a booklet of images from the walks. None from the smug gear heads. In fact more beginner's images were chosen at the time. The 'pros' were too busy comparing their toys to take any decent photos. The gimps. :D

Water off a duck's back ... don't let it get to you. I know others that use very simple gear [D40, with a couple of primes] and they get published, they never have any issue getting stuck in on shoots among the more 'ardcore gear heads.

You get respect for the end result, not the gear that took you there.

Id have called them over to demonstrate their fantastic skills and showcase thier amazing body of work.

Then hit them over the head with the 400mm

They are the ones with the problem, never worry about them, just forget them and get on with taking your photographs

Next time shout after them "I won't even try imagine what you 2 will be up to hiding in the bushes together" :D

They probably had 7D's which have the same sensor as your 550D.

I've got some nice kit, but I'm just an enthusiastic amateur. People who look down their noses like that are just twonks. I've had people look-up to my kit but it doesn't make me a knowledgeable photographer. I'd happly take direction from someone who had an 1100D and a kit lens but who knew exactly what they were doing.

This story is useless without pictures ;)

Why didn't you snap a photo of the idiots so everyone could ridicule them :D

Unfortunately there are many shallow people out there who will form an opinion of somebody's ability, experience or knowledge based solely on the kit they have or don't have.

Or politley hand them your camera and ask them if they wouldn't mind taking a photograph of you.

When they hand it back, have a quick look, ask them if they wouldn't mind taking it again, have a quick look, ask if they wouldn't mind taking it again, have a quick look.........

I'd of either just called the *****'s and told them to **** off, or said "it's the 12 inches behind the camera that takes a photo, not the 12 inches in front of it numb nuts!" :D

If people show you no respect, don't worry about showing none back :D

OR

I'd have followed them and every time they settled down for a photo in their camo gear I would have made a racket :P I'd have to of had nothing else on to do this though :p

Unfortunately there are plenty of idiots in this world. Ignore them. The jokes on them, not you.

I've had a few conversations with gear heads who keep on boasting about their equipment. I just tell them I'm not really interested in cameras but I would be interested in seeing their photographs.

That usually shuts them up.

I love gear, but I don't rub it in people faces, I don't have the best, but I love gear, but I hope I don't rub it in people's faces, I know people with the basics, I let them try my lenses and what ever just to show what gear can do to help, but it's all about using and taking, wel all have been there with the kit lens, have to start some were

I must be lucky, because fortunately I have never come across any other togs like this. Most I see when I m out, just chat, and I have had a few invitations to come along to local camera clubs.

absolute hard ons some people.... i bet he would have been nice as pie if he was on his own.

You should have done the Dom Jolley act... put your mobile to your ear and shout really loudly..."yep, yep... just out and about now with the camera..... nah, not got much today, bit boring... haha.. you'll never guess... just seen these two nob heads in full camo gear.... ho ho ho... honestly, i'll tell you about it when i get home"

Hi Nick, seen this at bike clubs and golf clubs, people always chasing the next model. F<#% em and move on.

I had the same sort of thing the last time I took my 550D out before I sold it. A couple of guys came past, one with a 7D and the other with a 5D and a pair of Sigma long lenses, sniggering away at my little 550D. They weren't sniggering the next time they saw me as I'd got my 5D3 and Canon 70-200 2.8 MkII and my 60D with Sigma 150-500 OS and when they came towards me I totally blanked them and walked off laughing. Not seen them out recently.

You should totally ignore morons like them, they are the sort of people who'll blame their gear for their bad photos and go spend hundreds more trying to get shots as good as yours. I speak to everyone as an equal whether they have a point and shoot or a 1DIV as we all have a common interest, as a photographer rather than a gearhead.

So there's your answer. To shut up a gearhead all you have to do is buy more gear than them & rub their noses in it :)

Is this topic still talking about dogging?

I really do not understand why people allow others to get to them, so they want to look at you and laugh, they want to look down their noses and snigger. Are you going to lose sleep over it? Look back at them and laugh even louder, they will then be the ones who more than likely get wound up, or they will get worried you are mental and run like f***

I tend to ignore people and most of the time I do not even notice other people when I am out and about because I am not concerned with anyone else other than myself..

This is not specific to photography, it is the same in most hobbies/interests/professions.

As others have said, just rise above it - it is their problem not yours.

Very rude isn't it. Although it's easy enough to react, I like to pull a particular facial expression. The kind of facial expression you pull when you see a person spit on the street.

I had a situation with my old 400d. Someone was banging on to themselves and their wife how I should upgrade. He didn't have his camera.

I asked him if he wouldn't mind getting a nice photo of me cos I couldn't do it.

Off I popped behind the sun. Checked it out and asked him to do it again cos the exposure was too low. Put it in spot focus, he took picture. Asked him if he then knew why he managed to make the sky white and how I could sort it out. It was funny. I am very confident!

I wonder if Merceds & BMW drivers look down on Vauxhall Corsa drivers, or if Rolls and Bentley owners look down on them, who cares :D

I have some mates who are into metal detecting and you get the same attitude there. One bloke in particular was always sneering at the newcomer's machines and asking if they bought it at Toys R Us and other witty comments.

But of the group he goes detecting with he's the one who's found the least as he's too busy showing off.

It's the final product that matters not the tool that created it.

Best to ignore. I go to bradgate a lot especially during the rut and there are plenty of photographers shooting away with longer lenses then me and more experience and those that i have spoken to are great offering help and advice. It was one of those last year that introduced me to this sight. Makes me think that these fellows are all equipment and no ..............

Just reply back, if having all the kit makes you a prick, then I'll keep my POS with its kit lens thanks very much:thumbs:

I've had the reverse of this when engaging in conversation with fellow togs; 'Just cos he's got a big lens it doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about'. All I did was challenge his assertion that; 'All Spitfires are green'.

Had the same situation the other day! Was photographing for Skyride (bike thing) and some guy had a good look at my nikon d80 and kit lens and tutted etc...was a right nooooob in the pit aswell pushing around and that.

But then i had the complete opposite a few weeks before! Was out shooting a festival and this random guy comes up to me (with a lot more kit than I could ever afford at the mo!) and tells me he's seen some of my photos and is really inspired by my work :)

So unfortunately there is always gonna be the idiots, which unfortunately stand out more than the decent people in the world.

Bit like people who boast about always flying first class, when we all know that our sort of people would never fly on a commercial airline. Just too tacky, when you have a Gulfstream on standby.
