Ok I have been looking at getting some prime lenses, mainly the 35mm 50mm and 85mm.
i was just looking around warehouseexpress and the diferance in price on them is masive, take the 50mm F1.8 II that is £69 and then the 50mm F1.4 USM is £223 :suspect:
What is going on there just for USM and the extra .4 stop you are paying alot more is it really worth it?
The same thing is with the 35mm and the 85mm. What should i go for?

The extra price is for the quality of the lens as well, the 50mm 1.4 has a metal mounting bracet and a full focus ring for example.

it is like cars, you can buy the bog standard 1.4, but the 1.6 comes with extras as standard as well as the bigger engine.

Depends on what you're going to be using it for as to whether it's worth it or not. The 1.4 is a better lens. Whether it's £200 odd quids worth of 'better' is up to you.

The 50mm 1.8 is an amazingly good lens for the money. However, it is cheaply built, slow to focus(compared to the 1.4 version) and to me, too small- I couldn't hold my camera properly, so I sold it and went for the 1.4, which is faster, focuses quicker and more silently and feels good on the camera. I am not sure if I could tell which took which picture, so unless testing lenses is your thing you may not see much difference in the image in the real world...
Other differences include low light focusing, and the extra bokeh quality.
Worth the extra - your money, your choice - clearly lots of people think so, but money is money - then again, your pictures might show the benefits of the better(or more expensive) lenses.
Go for the widest aperture you can afford, if you will use what it has to offer, or get the cheaper ones and spend the extra going on holiday, treating a friend, or even by giving me the savings

Thats the thing i dont get, how it could be £200 better.
Im a sucker and will get the expencive one but is it really going to give me that much better results.

It's actually 2/3 stop difference, but the 1.4 is a bit soft at 1.4

the difference is £154 not £200!

you should be able to get the 50mm 1.4 for a bit cheaper than that from HK(watch out for customs charges) or from kerso on this forum, nice bloke to deal with and reliable. He imports the lenses and ships from scotland so saving any chance of custom charges.

personally i went for the 50mm 1.4 because of the extra quality and apperture blades for increased bokeh.

you want to see a massive price difference, check out the 1.2!

yeah, it is quite big, and i vaguely remember seeing somewhere that it wasnt that much better.

back on topic, what are you going to shoot, what camera have you got and whats the budget?

Well the budget is what ever the lens costs really.
I have a Canon 40D and a old 1D MK1(dont use it much though) mainly use the 40D. Lenses at the mo i have 16-35 F2.8 L, 70-200 F2.8 IS and 17-85 IS.
I am setting up a studio so i can do more specific shots because ijust normaly wonder to places and take waht i see. but looking to give Studio stuff a try.

using youe existing lenses, set the focal lengths to match the primes and see whether you can get the shot you want/need. should help narrow down which focus length you want/need. if you are just trying, you cant go much wrong with the 50mm 1.8, and from the wanted or for sale boards you wont have a problem selling it for mimal loss. for the 85mm they are both supposedly very good, but the 1.2L is massive, search the forum for CTs review, he bought one recently.

a good person to ask would be CanonBob, he has probably or does own every version or near as damn it and will tell you the picks of the bunch.

D'smurf, You've got me curious now as to how you ended up with the 16-35 2.8 over the 17-40 and still you're asking why the 1.4 50 is better than the 1.8??

I'm not asking if the 1.4 is better i want to know if its £200 better :D
I was going to get at least 2 of the above lenses if not all 3 of them, but in a studio with lighting and set conditions is it really worth it?
