Whats the best way to take a photo of lightning?

Long exposure and lots and lots of patience lol
 
Magic Lantern! it has a "motion detection" function that can work in two ways one of which is exposure difference i.e. changes in light level.

You need to experiment with the sensitivity but it's easily quick enough for a bit of lightning.
 
Tripod and long exposure.

Using a tripod means you can always use parts of a non-lightning shot for the surroundings if need be.
