Whats the best way to get cheap flights/great deals?

Am looking at a couple of things... just got back from Disneyworld and keen to get back in a year or 2, but flights, car and hotel are roughly the same as a Virgin package deal!

Secondly, wife is keen on a trip to New York... again, prices are possibly not as low as i was hoping. Especially when trying to combine the 2 into 1 trip (the flights back from Orlando were £3k alone).

So what is the best way to get cheap flights... used Skyscanner, although airlines don't seem to have prices more than a year away. Is there an optimum time to book flights, i.e. best to book as soon as they come out, or book with a month to go? Any tips or tricks?

Also, anywhere that can show a month or more at once - easy jet are great for that!
 
Have you tried open jaw fights? You can sometimes get a good deal on going, say, Amsterdam to Orlando and back to London. Then using a cheap flight to get to Amsterdam.

Or multi trip flights, we looked at doing London to Miami to new York to London, which was £400 return each with Virgin/Delta. Admittedly in February....

Airlines have a model of how quickly they expect to sell the seats on any given flight. The prices will change depending on whether they're ahead or behind of 'target'.
This doesn't help much with booking since you don't know when other people will book. What is does tell you though, is not necessarily to panic if the price suddenly jumps - it may be that the flight was slightly behind target and a party of 6 just bought tickets. The price will slide back over the coming days/weeks, unless of course there's another big booking...
 
Regarding Disneyworld, you could drive to the one near Paris. The tunnel is quick and cheap.

Yeah, you only have to spend about £100,000 of your own money on training before an airline will consider taking you on.
 
I look at individual airlines but over the years I tend to go by virgin as by the time you add up the total cost of budget airlines there's not a lot in it
 
We use Skyscanner for flights. Generally, the sooner you book, the cheaper the flight.
The cut off is about 6 to 7 months- so the return flight for my daughter at the end of December is just possible.

The best deals on lodgings tends to be Airbnb - staying in someone's house as a guest.

Rooms go quickly so you need to book a few months in advance. I think all the summer ones have gone this year.
 
go via Europe and never direct.
we went to bali last year via Frankfurt
direct from Manchester £1200 return each
via Frankfurt £800 each

extra few hours for £400 each saving
