What would give the better results in Photoshop.

Im doing a photoshoot with my dog and until now i have always just edited out the dog lead etc by using content aware or the clone tool however as i haven't done the shoot yet I'm thinking i could photograph the area then photograph my dog, put the dog image over the background image( background image is a building) and then just use the erase tool on the lead. So what gives the cleaner and better looking image from both ways of doing it.Cheers...

Would I be daft in suggesting removing the lead before you take the photograph :thinking:

Not possible as i had to ask permission to get my dog in there and was asked to keep it on the lead plus he is a 10 stone lump with masses of slobber and would just pass that on to others around/visiting the building--which is not a good thing..lol...Normally he would stand fine without the lead however when people are around he just gets distracted and would run off to share his slobber with everyone.

Longish lead trailing behind the dog before trailing it away in the OOF area? Be easier to clone out.
 
Might it be possible to get a few minutes of "private" access, or at least get there early enough to avoid too many people?

I like your thinking, I would imagine though in practice with a moving dog it would be easier to shoot off a tripod, focus on the dog get the shot. Then without changing the framing lock the tripod down a bit and once the dog had moved shoot again. As you say, overlay the first shot on top of the second and erase through with a soft edge brush.
 
Using a blank frame will be cleaner and easier. If your wife is going to be stood in shot as well due to the short lead, then that's a fair amount of cloning where you're just duplicating information to fill in the gaps. The more detail and structure the background has, the harder that's going to be.

If you can lock off the camera and take a blank frame sans dog and wife, then you can just paint in the dog in two seconds and have a perfect background all around.

Yes or painting the dog in is a clever way to do it because of camera movement. Be aware of other details like shadows that can't go missing for the shot to remain real though...
 
Thanks folks. I will be using a solid tripod/head and remote. Going for natural light for this shoot. Should be ok with a little side light and the shadows should be ok as i thought about that. Thanks folks. I only do basic editing to wildlife images so dont know much with Photoshop but can do some basics. Any tutorials or more info on " painting the dog in". Cheers.
 
If the framing of the shot does not move then you don't have to be neat even because the background will match. Apart from the lead and the missus you don't paint in.

Or depending on the colour/shade of the dog and the background it might lend itself to a channel mask. If you are bored/interested in that put the shot up when done and il explain.
