taking photos of newborns?

My wife is expecting again (due about 7 weeks time) so I am wanting to get some photos of the baby and was thinking of getting a new lens so any advice on what to get and how to best take photos of young babies would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Pete

Eiher a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8.

Alternatively the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX is a pretty darn good lens (I used to have one).

Canon 85mm F1.2L

Or a 50mm F/1.4 great for low light areas..:)

Money no object..

24-105 f4 L as will do nearly everything you could need.

If you want something faster then ... EF24-70mm f2.8 L USM

I've taken loads with my 24-70 and its been great. The Sigma is like £290.

Congrats Mate :) (my missus is due in 6 weeks - 20th August) :)

I'm plumping for a nifty fifty and have a number if ideas i'm thinking of, drop me a pm if you want me to let you see some of the ideas i'm thinking for the baby :D

just been looking at the nikkor 50mm f1.4 d and the 50mm f1.8 d will i notice a vast difference between these lenses as the f1.4 is about 2.5 times more expensive

thanks for all the replies

I recently took pictures of my cousins 5day old baby, I used a canon 100mm f2.8 macro. 50mm didn't let me focus close enough to fill the frame. 17-40 f4 was also used as this focuses closer than my 50mm f1.8.

another vote for the nifty 50
my avatar is my 13 hour old boy taken with the nifty...

Everyone is shouting Canon, nobody has actually asked what camera he uses,...

Although Peterg just mentioned Nikkor so he must be a goodin' ;)

The 50 f/1.4 is better built and overall a nice lens but if budget is an issue then the 1.8 is excelent.

What's your budget? If around £80 go for a 50mm 1.8. If it's nearer £200+ then you're into 24-70 2.8 range which will give you more flexibility & use once the little'un is not so little anymore...
Non-OEM brands will always be cheaper with only about a 5% sacrifice on quality. I've just bought the Sigma 24-70 2.8 from another TP member & it's the mutts.

Also depending on your situation when shooting you may not be able (or want!!!) to get that close so the zoom will help.

well I can probably go up to £250ish i allready have the standard kit lens and i have an old nikkor lens 70mm - 210mm and a tokina 80-400 (but its a pile of poo)
i quite like the thought of f1.4 but then it make sense to get a lens that has multi uses

hmmm
decisions decisions

thanks for all the great advice :)

Cheers
