Am going from north west to stevenage on sat..

when i went to northampton the other week i chose m1 over the nightmare m6 (only a few miles difference A to B).. but the m1 was even worse with roadworks from m62 and most of the way down..

so was thinking m62 to a1 and all the way down a1 to stevenage but not been on there in yrs.. is it full of rd works as well or pretty clear... anyone travel it a lot?

I'd avoid the M1. The roadworks from Sheffield to Chesterfield are horrendous. 30 miles at 50th no thanks. M6 is bad near Warrington and Stoke. I've not been on the A1 for a couple of weeks but from memory I'd take that any day. Watch out for a few speed cameras at Grantham and I think there are some at the bottom too.

M62 to Ferrybridge and down the A1 Tony.

From the M62 to Huntingdon is a lot better nowadays without the roundabouts, but I've not carried on beyond there for a few years.

The A1 from the M62 junction to the M18 just south of Doncaster can be very busy, but should be better at the weekend, especially if you are there early and on the whole the A1 is pretty good.

An alternative is the M6 to where it meets the M1, north of Rugby, but take the A14 and join the A1 at Huntingdon.

The A14 past Kettering is a 'mare at the moment and there are regular incidents between there and the M6 to slow you down. Which ever route you chose, you'll probably think you've chosen the wrong one ... or you might just have a lucky day.

A14 is free running from Junction 9 (kettering) to the A1. but as New2Me has said, the A14 from about Jct 5-9 is heavy with roadworks, plus some congestion in the works area where it meets the M1/M6

Its a big tarmac road with white lines seperating the traffic into lanes ...

Well.. with three passengers all having an opinion.. we went M6/M1 and tp be fair it was a pretty easy run. (I was expecting major delays but nothing much) .. didn't use the toll on the way down but did on way back as part of m6 was closed the other way... wasnt a nightmare at all.... only touched the a1 at j7 .... so ...oops sorry. thanks for all the helpfull info. much appreciates but ended up not using.. ta :)

PS over 400 mile round trip.. stopped at corley services each way and cost 50 quid in diesel..

Just a the moment it's no contest the M1 is a nightmare. You can add at least an hour onto your journey time.
