What's possible with these lights?

I was out shooting with Cowasaki last night as he wanted some practice using his Lencarta Safari lights outdoors. We had a very successful shoot and I think we both learnt a lot but there was one thing we didn’t quite get to work properly.

Both the Safari lights were triggered by a single radio trigger (attached to the battery pack) which worked fine. We also started with an SB-800 on a radio trigger which worked fine. The problem came when we wanted to add more light with an SB-600 but we didn’t have another radio receiver to mount it on and trigger it with.

We tried to get both the SB-800 and the SB-600 to trigger optically from the light of the Safari lights but couldn’t manage to remember what the settings are to do it. I’m not even sure it’s possible with the SB-600 but I think it is with the SB-800.

Is anyone able to explain what is possible with the combination of Safari lights, SB-800, SB-600, a radio trigger and 2 receivers?

You should be able to put the SB800 and the SB600 into slave mode and trigger them both with the light from the safari. I know I can do this with the SB800 as I have the same set up, but I'm sure you can do this with a SB600.
With whay you have as gear your set ups should be infinate, or just about.
If you want a laugh perhaps I should come up with another safari, 2 x SB800's 2X EX520's an old sunpak hamerhead gun and see just how much light we can throw at somthing :-)

A quick google says yep the 600 has a slave mode.

I've just done a quick google search and the top result that came up was Ken Rockwell saying there is a remote slave function but to use it you need to use your on-camera pop-up flash. Would it still be possible if I had a radio transmitter on the camera's hotshoe to trigger the Safari lights?

It has a CLS slave mode, it will not work as a regular optical slave.

You'd need to put the receiver on the SB-600 (in regular normal plain old flash mode), and put the SB-800 into SU-4 mode. Then the SB-800 would fire from either the SB-600 or the Safari.

The SB-600 can NOT operate as an optical slave, only as a CLS triggered slave.

The SB-800 CAN, in SU-4 mode (Reached by holding down the centre of the D-pad for a few seconds, then navigating the remote menu)

Why not put the SB-800 in SU4 mode, and attach the radio trigger to the SB-600 ?

Could've sworn I said that. ;)

Nahhhhh You never said that John!!! :naughty:

I did say that yesterday but it just wouldn't work. I think I need to charge the batteries up too.

I knew the SB800 would work as an optical slave and the SB600 wouldn't.

Batteries just replaced with fully charged ones and both flashes working JUST as predicted yesterday :)

I am buying another RF602 pair off FITP so will have 3 x TX and 3 x RX.... Might just change the order to 2 x RX instead of one of each and have 2 x TX and 4 x RX. That would be very flexible. 1 pair to fire the camera. 1 x TX on the camera, 1 x RX on each SB and one on the Safari power box.
