saw a couple of guys out today using long lens supports with rifle type plastic stocks ,despite doing a search on e.bay I can't find out what there called ,I know the lads got them from the states ,any ideas /links

They are called rifle stocks or sometimes shoulder stocks.
IMHO, they are open to misidentification if used in a public area.

If you search Ebay Jeff, under "Camera Rifle Support" there's one on there.(y)

George.

A sad and tragic reflection of modern times that folk have been met with lethal force even for carrying a chair leg so with something 'most' features of shoulder supported weapon......what do you think might be the law enforcement response???

The picture Ken posted could be (easily???) mistaken for a baton round weapon!

Still not the one I am after unfortunately ,any more ideas

No paul it's not that this is a seperate unit ,the new version I,m after has the rifle stock a sliding adjuster for the camera and a attached monopod which can be set at 180 degrees to improve your stance etc
