Ok, got a mental block. What's the technique called on portrait photography which isn't HDR but results in a high detail, sharp almost hyper real look?

Yep, I think that's the one. Not a huge fan normally but I believe it may well work for a low key b&w. I'll give it a try.

Well, I had a go....
What's the verdict? I can't decide myself whether I like it or not!

Personally not a fan, I don't like the way the skin looks. I'd have gone for a fairly high high-pass filter and kept it a bit lighter. Also maybe crop the sides in so there isn't so much dead space or at least so his nose is centered, feels like he is in just the wrong possition in the frame.
 
You can get pretty close with topaz, this was just playing about but I'm not really a huge fan of the style.
