The, sort of, portable hard drive with LCD screen that allows you to download from your card, view the images and save/delete as required?
 
Not sure if they have a general name other than maybe "digital storage device". Presume you're on about the likes of the Jobo Giga One?

Personally I think they're rather expensive for what they are and you may well be better off with a netbook, which also does a lot more.
 
Epson was the one I was thinking of guys, thanks.
I know a netbook would have many plusses but the Epson unit is more portable.
 
Wow, even more expensive than I thought.

Seriously, unless you really have to have the smallest device possible, why on earth would you chose something like that over a netbook which would offer more space, flexibility and a larger screen for less money!? It may be smaller than a netbook but the latter isn't exactly huge.

PS. I'm not having a go or criticising here - everyone is obviously free to choose whatever product they feel best fits their needs - I'm just personally baffled as to why anyone would spend so much on such a device. They do seem hideously expensive for what they are.

Lots of names for these things, image tank, portable image viewer etc.

I think these days though that these things are largely redundant, most people might be better off using a cheap netbook for portable data storage.
 
The smallness is the advantage for me and there's no Windows to worry about, you just turn it on, plug your memory card into it and once the files are copied it goes back into your pocket or bag.

The Flashtrax seems to be much more reasonably priced on eBay ... is it okay to use?
 
Do you want something to back up your images or to look at them. If you just want to backup then this is probably one of the best PSD (Photo Storage Device) options. If you want to be able to look at the pictures then a netbook is the best option.

The Flashtrax is old, slow and has a pitifully small capacity. The Epson is incredibly expensive, slow and low capacity. The Nexto is less than half the price of the Epson, has 500 GB of storage, is fast and has a great battery life. The only thing it can't do is display the images. But I don't want to have to play around with my images while I'm away on holiday. Even when I take my netbook as well as a PSD I don't bother editing anything.
 
I believe the generic name is a digital thingummy-wotsit.
 
I've got a small image tank that I've used for foreign holidays etc, I wanted something to be able to view/review images but a netbook is too big and too 'attractive' to want to take around with me.
 
I think they're great! I've been using an old Epson P2000 for years, but the 20gb drive is full and it's very slow.

I keep meaning to replace it with a Vosonic 8870, which seems to have both the best spec around, and cheapest - £250 with 250gb http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vosonic-VP8...2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1284424604&sr=1-2

I've read a few peeps say it's good, but I've not actually used one (battery was flat :( ).
 
I recently bought an Epson P6000, 80gb hard drive and superb screen display (4", not 40" fortunately or it wouldn't fit my pocket).
I love the way I can just pop a full cf card in and it downloads the card and turns itself off after finishing, and I have confirmation on screen that the card is backed up.
