Hi All, only my second post here so be gentle please:)

I've currently got a Canon 550D & more recently a 5D mkii with the intention of selling the 550d.

My problem is this, and it's quite odd.....I'm struggling to get a better picture with the 5d over the 550d:eek:

Just 20 minutes ago, I put a 35mm f2 on the 550d, and a 50mm on the 5d. Set both cameras up exactly the same and took some identical shots. The 550d images are much crisper with better hues.

How/why? I'm confuddled....

Cheers

How about swapping the lenses over and doing the same?

It might give you your answer....

Better camera doesn't take better picture I am afraid. At moment I can see you are still using the 550d with its limit. What F number has been set on each lens ?
if you set them wide open then the DOF on 550D and the DOF on the 5D will be difference. On 550D you get more DOF due to sensor size therefore it looks better compare to the 5d on that instance.

How are you viewing the images to make the comparison?

The way you view the images will make quite a difference to the apparent sharpness, don't give up ;)

David

Thanks for the replies.

Both shot raw, both at 1/100, f8.0, iso100.

550d lens EF 35mm f 2.0
5d lens EF 50mm f 1.4

Both shot raw, both at 1/100, f8.0, iso100.

Are you using a tripod. 1/100 sec is not too fast for maximum sharpness if hand holding. I have a 7D and more is better (shorter) as far as shutter speed is concerted in my experience.

How are you converting the RAW files so you can view them, DPP, Lightroom, Photoshop???

Some software will ignore camera default sharpening settings, some will add their own, depends on camera and software, need more detail.

Are you 100% pixel peeping to compare or viewing full images on screen, more detail needed ;)

David

Cheers David, just took some different shots at different, higher shutter speeds and interchanged the lenses as mentioned above.

Am viewing images raw in photoshop, and converting to jpg at max iq.

Zooming in until before images become pixelated.

550d is still winning  I'm no expert when it comes to photography and cameras by any stretch. I got the 5d as a replacement for the 550, but might just keep hold of the 550 now. My heart says 5d, my head says 550d.:( My main reasons for wanting to get a 5d were mainly for portrait stuff, low light, less noise and full frame.

You are shooting in the optimal condition. A better test would be use high iso , low f numbers. At iso 100 ( base iso of the sensor), you are not going to tell a lot of difference between those sensor. Actually 550D sensor is 2 year newer then the sensor in 5D mark 2 so of cause it will look better.

Well, I'm keeping the 5d. I made my decision on the basis that i'm a brut of a man and my hands are massive..... the 5d feels better:D

Probably change my mind later though....

Every new tool will take a certain amount of getting used to. You can't really expect to immediately start getting the best out of it, you have to get to know it first. I had the same when I went from a 350D/30D/40D to my 7D, it took a good few weeks for me to learn it and be happy with what I was producing. It took a while to get used to the 5Dmk2 as well but that was just because images looked so damned good straight out of the camera that I wasn't used to it!

As others have mentioned, can you post some examples so we can try figure out what's going on?

Try some prints.:)

1/30s is a bit slow unless you put the camera on a tripod.
The 5D is a tiny bit off on the WB. But other than that, it looks good. As the previous posters already said, it takes some time to get use to the new tool. Once you get used to it, you will love it.

thanks Chee and everybody else that posted. I Couldn't be bothered setting the tripod up so just did a quick point and shoot, & didn't bother correcting WB but am pleased with the 5d result, especially when zooming in on the images the difference is really apparent. Also find the colour balance on the 5d much better. The 550d seems too high on the reds and greens as standard...

So, decision is to keep the 5d and I'm happy with it. let the learning begin.

There'll be a mint 550d on fleabay tonight...

I sold the 5D...:bang:

To be fair the 550d put up a good performance considering it's a budget model, yes the 5d2 is better, but I was supprised with the 550 at 3200 iso.

I know...bonkers!

But I'm not a pro, and the 550d is a bit more 'family friendly' for holidays and such. I think I prefer to hone my photography skills a bit, get better lenses, and then get a mark 3 instead

That has to be the strangest thread I've ever read.

Are both cameras set to either jpeg or RAW? If one is one jpeg while the other in on RAW, the jpeg will look better because it has been auto sharpened in the camera

Hi

Read the whole thread, the op has sold one of them..

:bonkers:

You had one of the best ff cameras on the market which you admit fits your hand like a glove, then sold it to keep the 550?

It's obviously your decision, but it's a really strange one imho.

I think that the thread title says it all :D

The only strange thing is that the OP was looking to replace such a fine camera as the 550d in the first place.
His choice was probably swayed by the opinions of camera snobs writing on internet fora.

I had the 550d and got the 5d as an upgrade with the intention of selling the 550d. All things considered though, in the end I didn't think it was such a big upgrade considering price difference. That's the main reason I decided not to keep the mk2..

I'll probably wait for the mark 3 prices to come down and then go for it...

I'll be honest, I'm not quite sure what you were expecting if you didn't think the 5D2 was that big a jump from the 550D. Even the jump in quality from my 7D to my 5D2 is huge!

Still, it's your decision. It doesn't matter what camera you have as long as it works for you. :)

If you couldn't really see what the fuss was about with the 5D MkII, then you're probably going to feel the same about the MkIII.

Save your money and buy lenses.

The 550D certainly seems to take a nice photo, my daughter has one and always been impressed by the output. Know its got a variation of the 18mp sensor, but does seem to be the best version of it for some strange reason.

Saying that I still prefer the original 5D over the current range of crop sensors and thought the mkII would have the upper hand, but we all see things differently.

I have used both cameras myself extensively, my thoughts are that the 5D mk2 takes a dump on the 550D from a great height lol. I got some fantastic results from the 550D too all the same.

I think it'll help to try and be clear what the advantages are and when they can be seen.

I've only had 300D, 10D, 20D and now 5D and I also have a G1 and a LX5.

Forgetting about the LX5 for a moment and looking at the DSLR's and MFT camera I honestly see very little difference except at the higher ISO's and when pixel peeping. I shoot RAW and process each shot for best effect and unless I remember what I had with me when I took a shot or guess what camera took it based on the file name I struggle to be able to tell what camera took what shot.

This is an interesting read and backs up my own little experiments...

+1 I had a 7d which I loved I got it with the intention to do bmx photograhy which I did for quite a while. Bit recently I started to quite a lot of gig venues and the 7d noise performance unfortunately is not that great. So I traded it in and got the 5d mk ii. And I'm blown away by how much of an improvement it is. I'm just shocked on how high I can go with the ISO and still have quite low noise
