What's going on with stewing beef prices?

Blame the Normans! Beef is from boeuf, pork from porc, mutton from mouton.
But even then the meats not named after the animal(except for the sheep, same as over here) , boeuf is vache. porc is cochon etc. Same thing as here only a different language.
 
Old French rather than modern. Even the modern French for cattle (as opposed to cow) is bovins.
 
Best example of a once cheap meal must be fish and chips

When I was a kid we were quite poor, lived in the east end in a rented flat and money was tight, every Friday I went up the chippy for three lots of rock and chips, sometimes on another night too.

It was always a cheap meal, but these days ìt would cost the best part of twenty quid for three similar portions, why is it so dear now?
