Does anyone else have a problem with Facebook altering colour and degrading overall image quality, or is it just me?

I'm saving as jpeg, 800px longest edge. Should I be making them smaller?

facebook are poop with image quality. I just whack a link over to my flickr for those who are interested in looking at it at it's best (in regards to web viewing a'course) :D

facebook isn't the best place for photographs to be fair - and i'd read up carefully on their rules on who has the rights of the photos - not sure how true it is but someone told me they share some sort of distribution rights of your photos so if someone wants to use them they may be able to.

i should probably look into reading reading that reply back ha ha.

the compression they have on pics makes them look shoddy to be fair.

I've never found my facebook pics to reduce in quality, they always look as good as when on flickr

Facebook reduce to 604pixels on the longest side, so to get best quality on there then it's best to reduce to that as they make a decidedly average job of it.
Actually I think that has now changed - Facebook max image dimension is 720 pixels although the quality is still crap!

They must be bad quality in the first place then...

:p Only joking :p

badoom chush!

does this face book version

look any worse than this flickr version:

they look the same to me, maybe a tad softer on the fb one, but hardly ruined

One is 604px wide whilst the flickr one is 500px wide...? In terms of colour, no they don't differ as far as i can see.

Yep, Facebook one is softer and warmer and lacking in contrast compared to your Flickr one.

OK I'm nit picking here, and your example doesn't do any harm from the "Facebook touch". But I really noticed something was wrong when I started to add logos to my images and the writing was blurred, and the colour of the text was different. :)

Yep your right, have just uploaded some more to my page and let it re-size them.

yes it was doing horrific things to some gig photos last night, they were grainy because of high ISO anyway and it just left them looking horrible!

Last time I looked, Facebook was pretty rubbish with shrinking photos as you can see here.

I now use Lightroom to resize the images and shrink the filesize before uploading them.

Sam

i think it must be the way people are uploading them, not resizing first. i use facebook uploader on iphoto and have never had any issues as shown above

i just added hundreds of pics from the weekend to facebook as its the easiest way of sharing with everybody either in them or interested in them.
if they are degraded slightly during compression then so be it as anyone stealing them will get a lesser copy than one i can supply them

as a sharing medium it does what it says on the tin ;)

when you consider most pics on there are blurry smudged out of focus over/under exposed drunken phone pics then they dont look that bad :D

I only put up what I dont really care about as its just a quick way of showing pics to the family, I didnt think it was a dedicated photo site...............surely its a social network site or has it changed to a photo site

i now just post my flickr address on there with a brief description of what it's pointing to - you can tell people look because generally the views go through the roof on your photostream when you post it.

facebook is for nosey stalkers generally!

Facebook's jpeg resizing algorithm is designed to work best on pics of drunken blondes gurning into the camera after having consumed their own bodyweight in WKD :|
