A light leak somewhere, only affects the last couple of frames on a roll. Noticed it on the last roll i did but cant understand why it would only affect the last bit

Camera, dev tank, film roll itself?

That is an absolutely classic example of the roll not being tight enough between unloading, and developing. Affects the end in your example because obviously that part is most likely to be exposed to light first if it isn't tight.

Freecom is correct

Since i realised i wasn't winding them tight enough, I've been putting a strip of tape around the paper afterwards to make sure

yeah makes sense :) i'll keep an eye on it and tape it down from now on! cheers

The absolute gold standard would be to use 120 film canisters, but they are surprisingly difficult to get hold of. Local 120 labs may have some lying around though, worth asking.

Get some Adox 120 film, it comes in its own plastic canister. You can then reuse them again and again.

Apparently, a 120 film will fit in an empty tube of m & m minis.

A good excuse, if you need one, to stuff your face with sweets!:)

I just had this happen to me. I thought I'd be clever and rewind it in the camera to get it tight before I send it off. Number 12 comes up in the frame and all is going well then I hear a ping and I realise I'm looking at the film through the red window... The backing paper must has slipped. Problem is it took me a moment to make this realisation so I think I wound back through frames 11 and 10 as well. Doubly irritating as its Velvia and I need to pay to get it processed and to add to the injury I was up early this morning to take this roll. BAH.

Luckily I have a dark bag and managed to get it loosely rolled back on to the spool.

As in put the exposed roll in to the unexposed side and use the winding mechanism to get it tight on another take up spool.

You can make 120 canisters from a couple of 35mm canisters and some black electrical tape, here's one of mine.

I've spotted some ex army tubes on ebay, size seems tight but for a few quid, I'll give em a try.

im trying to get me ead round why you would need do it though ,,,does it not end up tight on the exposed side ?,

The film is only taped to the paper at the leading edge. If you try to rewind it, when you get to the point where the film starts it will curl up rather than follow the paper onto the spool as it won't have the tape to guide it as this is now at the wrong end.

Steve.

It wasn't wound on tight so the edges of the film were sticking over the edge of the spool, thus not light tight.

Ah, that explains it! I've developed enough of my own 120 to know that it wouldn't work but I was too tired to think it through when I started.
