What do you class as binable shots ?
I for some reason just keep every shot i've took thinking i could do something with that in PS,When in the real world they are totally un-usable.
I just can't bring myself to bin but now ive got thousands of crappy shots that's going to take for ever to go through.

relly my workflow consists of getting rid of blurred, unsharp images anything thats a technical error, then i bin the ones that i dont like such as portraits with the subject stuck in the middle of the frame. out of about 10 images i keep about 3/4.
 
Blurred, out of focus, miss-focused, massive lost details in shadows or highlights (unless that was the intention), subject partly cut off by edge of frame, multiple shots in a sequence that are all very similar, closed eyes etc

The list goes on. Basically, if I notice something distracting it usually gets binned unless it minor and easily fixable within a couple of mins in PS.
 
I'll get rid of the obvious crap but most shots with people in them I tend to keep. I went to a wedding a few years ago - nobody I really knew - I was the +1. They couldn't afford a photographer but I took quite a few snapshots. Months later the bride got in touch and asked if I had any pictures with her mother on them. She had recently died and, unbelievably - or not - nobody in the family had any photos of her. I did have three or four which I could easily have thrown away (film/photo prints then).

If you're worried about deleting any then why not just dump them on to a dvd? Or another hard drive, with them being as cheap as they are.
 
As above really, blurred, oof etc. Best thing is to not to delete any on the camera and do it through the computer ( which I always "forget" to do. :D)

I used to be like you and thought some of those would be good "abstract" shots, but the truth is you can make those from good shots.

I delete anything that isn't sharp, anything over exposed and very similar shots.

Storage of average shots is probably getting easier and more affordable, but will you ever use them???
 
Out of interest, for those of you who keep 3/4 of every 10 pics, just how do you keep the 0.5 one? ;)
 
Thanks for all the replies,i'm now on a mission of deleting a lot of shots,l'm lucky been a beginner of 12 months and not 12 years of sorting lol.
 
Being critical of your own work is one of the first steps to getting better. Obvious out of focus and chopped off subjects are easy to bin. But if you can look at several shots and decide why x y z should be deleted then next time you are taking pictures you can remind yourself what went wrong before.

I probably have about a 50% keep rate. Mainly due to the fact a like to shoot wildlife. I do end up with a few burst sequences so i pick one or two from those.

Remember though that occasionally it is good to keep a few 'bad' pictures just to remind yourself what level you were at 12/18/24 months ago.
