Yes
if you're putting it down this week have you thought about using a composite rather then wood? Doesn't't need repeated treatment and doesn't get slippy

I believe you still have to re-treat it every year, I know my son regrets using it on his. I don't have a oil or stain on my decking I just use the pressure washer lightly on it on it once a year usually springtime.
According to the tin
All previous coatings must be completely removed before applying Ronseal Decking Oi

Hope to lay my new decking this week. The boards are 'treated as standard' but thinking what should I put on top of it when pit down.

Decking Protector - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004R22GE0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1 or Decking Oil - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ronseal-RS...526891031&sr=1-1&keywords=ronseal+decking+oil

What is the difference between the 2? Which is best for maximising the life and look of the wood?

Suggest you treat the ‘bottom’ side with an extra coat as you will not be seeing it for a while, once it is down. Did a bit extra on the edges too.

Treating the bottom side won’t make any difference. Had ours down for 10 years plus. Don’t what ever you do get a “stain”.

We use an oil- either Liberon or https://www.wood-finishes-direct.co...xJmosglibWwpZu3PyMg4Vey2e4fNmVn4aAo_7EALw_wcB

Our only sign i’d “decay” is some of the ends which were originally cut... and it does really need doing each year

We’re planning a deck and to make it blend in, we’re going to stain it.
Why do you say not to?

The stain I used once- think it was Cuprinol sat on the surface and when worn, sort of rubbed off and looked a mess. You also need a stain remover of you ever need to change the colour.
The oils I linked to tend to soak in the wood better and don’t show the wear.

Thanks. Is oil better than the decking protector then. No plans to use stain.

When I lifted up the decking (10 or 11 years old) the underneath looked as new without having been oiled so wont be doing the underneath.

I had the same experience, definitely go oil based. I would also recommend hardwood over softwood, but it is more expensive.

Prevention

I replaced a large decked area when I took over this house. Top was fine but when I lifted it to run some cables the bottom of of decking was not good.

Replaced the decking and for the price of the coating it was worth it.

Agree about not using stain.
