Agree entirely Rob,and as long as we are not hoping to sell our pics they only have to please us.
If we want to sell we have to try and get a different slant on photography and try for something very illusive, something new!!!
But thats best left to the pro or semi or gifted amateur trying to get on the waggon.
It must be the same in the rag industry, and trying to create a"New Look"

I,m not good enough for either thank goodness , the pressure must be awful.

Over 'shopped images.

Images that use photoshop to rescue a bag of *****.

HDR.

Venture style portraits.

Shots of Bath.

As for blurred water.....Sometimes it's a fact of life. If you're sat by a river at 25 past sunset then you don't really want to be shooting at iso 1600 just to keep the water crisp. Due to the way sensors react to light, long exposures bring out so much more colour in sunrises and sunsets than a shorter one.

I was reading an interview with Joe Cornish today at work and he made a good point about the locations around the UK that have been shot to death. E.G. that mountain in Scotland. As a photographer you should be looking to get a new take on it, not just replicating everything that's gone before. It's relatively easy to rock up to glen coe in the autumn on a sunnyish evening and get a nice shot of the Mountains with some snow on the peak etc etc etc. What's harder is finding your own style of photography (not photoshop) and then applying that to the location. How many people have sat there in the freezing winter on a full moon night for 20 minutes getting a nice moonlight shot of the place for instance?

The same goes with portraits, again it's relatively easy, once you know how to do it, to set up a white background and blast out trendy portraits of families in casual clothing with their shoes off and a wind machine on. It doesn't make you a good 'tog.

Same with Macro, once you have the kit and the technique down it's fairly easy to get good, sharp shots of insects that a lot of people will go 'wow' at because they've never seen things like that before.

What is difficult is to find a way to make your stuff stand out from the crowd.

I'll hold up my hand and admit that I'm guilty of turning out generic photo's, but my arguement is that I'm just learning my craft at the moment, the skills I need to be able to let my creativity show through the images that I produce.

Just some thoughts ;)

That's what sets good photographers apart from everyday ones. Those who can look at things with a fresh eye and not just immitate.

agree with all this.

For the ones saying oh why won't you critque my beautiful sunset:'( well its because I know you'll get 20 million comments of great colour! beautiful etc maybe if its at the bottom of the page with 3230208 views and no comments then yeah maybe i'll give it the bump it needs :).I guess this is why i'm very attracted to street photography as alot of it I see is unique although there are lots of street shots that have been done to death ie the homeless which I don't agree with really but we won't get into ethics of that:|.

Ahh,I see, you come here for the beer and agro..............:bonk::bat::help:

Absolutely! Any more threads like this and the site will turn into a photography forum.......:naughty:

Its funny, since posting yesterday, I have been thinking further on this. We are all commenting on this "done to death" as photographers.

Ditto...

Before I took up togging, I looked in awe at so many great photographs. Thats what inspired me to get a DSLR, wishing I could take photographs like the ones I was seeing.

Ditto again! :)

I hope that feeling doesn't end once your able to produce shots steadily.

I wouldn't say I can produce shots steadily, but the feeling you describe has gone for me, for certain shots that "I" have done to death so to speak. I am desperately seeking some form of originality now, and instead of trying to learn camera settings (which I am way of from mastering), I am spending more time trying to think outside my box, and expand what I am able to spot when out and about.

In short, I am really struggling to enjoy taking photos of a variety of subjects, as I feel I am not really trying at times...

Hard to explain, sorry :(

Gary.

Not done to death, but I notice a lot of "trash the dress" involving the woman splashing around in the water in her dress. :D I want to try this one day (as photographer, not wearing a dress)

Shouldn't we be asking whats been done so badly as to kill its beauty and/or originality ... certainly not the original American Beauty shot it seems, cos a few have mentioned that .... especially as that was a interpritation of one of Anna Leibowitz shots taken many years earlier.

So shouldn't we measure our efforts to take good shots with the view to surpass the originals and make them better. Surely thats one of the goals of any aspiring photographer, how else can one judge.

Motorbikes on the track on a bend! They are all the same except for the colours!! :D

A lot of seemingly rather grumpy or jaded people in here ;)

This thread is almost saying "Have you taken a photo? Well than don't bother posting it! In fact why don't you just give up photography."

I'm going to take a long exposure of a waterfall, gets some light trails in, someone to pose with rose petals, give it some selective colouring, and then tone map the lot :D

Post of the day, there :D

I won't go back to where I saw a couple of Heron to try and capture a photo of them and I have no doubt the picture I intended to enter into one of the competitions will fall into the done to death category.

What's done to death to those who have been into photography for a good while is simply an opportunity for practice for noobs like myself.

Where would we be without "Hello World"

I ,for one, like Heron photos, the birds themselves are b***ards, but are very graceful, so go find em, photo em and post em..............

Remember, this is your hobby, photograph what YOU like.............:)

I'm absolutely fed up with people moaning about " this has been done " or "thats been done before" of course they have, and if you don't want to see variations of 'em again, don't buy any photography mags, don't view any photography websites, dont take your camera out with you, don't take any holiday pics to remember in short just critisise everyone and everything because your mind is not inventive or creative enough (a bit like mine )to do 'em in a different way and take up another hobby...like knitting perhaps.
