Hey folks, got my 5d mk iii and I have only ever used the neck straps that come with the camera’s. I have found a few times that the camera, grip and 100-400 lens can be a bit heavy around the neck. What kind of straps are most of you using and what would you recommend/avoid.

I mostly use it for Wildlife and Motorsports if that makes a difference :)

I use a qstrap and use it with my 70-200mm and my 50-500mm on my d3100. Great strap and the lens is in a much better location. Check out the trader sales section for discount

I use a black rapid too, I do a lot of walking across country and in the mountains etc and would highly recommend it. They work on the same principal as the Q strap mentioned above though.

Another vote for the Black Rapid. Very comfortable for me with 5D2 and 70-200 F2.8L. I use the Sport.

For two bodies at the same time I heartily recommend Black Rapid, it serves me very well at weddings and events. If I'm just using one I ll use the Optech pro. Takes all the pressure off the neck and is very good.

I am thinking about one of these, as prefer to have the camera nice and tight and not bouncing around.

I've got a couple of Q-Strap slings and also a Q-Strap double harness and they are very well made, strong and reliable. The harness is very comfortable for carrying a 5D3 and Sigma 150-500 OS on one and a 7D and Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII, sometimes with a MkIII 2x converter as well.

I have both Q strap and Op/tech pro. I prefer the Op/Tech. though nothing wrong with the Q strap.

Optech Pro if you want to carry a single body around with a heavy lens and/or flash all day. The difference between that and the manufacturers strap is incredible.

(spoken from the point of view of someone who spends a lot of time carrying gear!)

Q strap for me too. 1D MKiiN plus Sigma 50-500, still comfortable.

I agree, Optech Pro or the Utility strap are both ideal for carrying a heavy set-up, I'm not massive a fan of the sling straps as they bounce around a little too much for my liking but out of all of them my favourites are either the BlackRapid Sport or Custom SLR Glide Strap :)

For comfort, for me it has to be a Phat Strap. I use one with the D5000 and D70 - so comfortable round the neck.

Yeah equipment bounce is the killer when you carry heavy loads - be it cameras or anything else.

It will sap your strength quicker than anything.

Perhaps I'm a bit odd, but I always have my bag with waist strap on and simply pop the hook of the tripod collar of my 100-400 or 70-200 2.8 over the belt and the camera quite happily hangs there whilst I'm walking, climbing over stiles etc with no weight on my neck at all, so I've never seen the point in anything other than a neck strap
(albeit a nice comfy padded one).

I hand carried a 300/2.8 + extender and 7D with a black rapid strap no problem and this is a lot heavier than the 100-400.
When carrying heavy(ish) loads these type of straps are a million times better than the neck straps IMO.
Black rapid straps may be a bit more expensive than others but when carrying several thousands of pounds worth of gear I do not begrudge an extra £20 or so to get the best.
It always surprises me when folks are willing to risk their valuable set-up by buying a cheapish 'knock-off' on ebay just for the sake of a few pounds.
