Hi guys ive been mulling over the idea of getting s 50mm as ive heard so much about them but then founds out for Nikon (well for my d5000) i would need a 35mm which would act as a 50mm.

Ive looked around Jessops and Jacobs and there both priced at £169, does anyone know where i could get one cheaper?

here is the link for the lens on the jessops website

It's £157 from Jacobs if you use the code JUNE12 at checkout.

As for the lens itself, it's a cracker and highly recommended - I used mine on my D90 a lot and then found it can even be used on my D700 when I got that, as long as the focus distance isn't too far and the aperture is wide enough (my intended use for it anyway) the vignetting is not too intrusive at all.

On a cropper like the D5000/D90 the focal length of 35mm is a very useful one to have, much more so than 50mm (equivalent to 75mm in 35mm/full frame terms).

If you can stump up the extra cash, get the 35mm f/2 instead.
It may seem odd recommending a slower lens which costs more than the f/1.8, especially when you're asking for cheaper options, but it's a totally different animal - and it will still work on FX if ever you decide to upgrade.

The f/2 Nikkor is the 35mm lens... the f/1.8 is a cheap facsimile thereof...

apart from the big distortion (which is quite unacceptable to me), and the vignette on a Fullframe, this lens is very good for the money it costs :)

Anyway, I prefer my 35 f/2 to this 35 f/1.8 :D

The 35mm f/2 won't autofocus on his camera though.

oh i forgot about your camera, with the D5000, the 35 f/1.8 is no brainer, grap it and you won't regret

Quite right - apologies...

So...Buy a 35mm f/2 and a D700...:D

pass me your bank details and ill get one tomorrow :naughty:

lol yeah ill have a look at this lens then... try and do some serious saving.. with me now on half pay :( due to being off work with deep vein thrombosis and a torn cruciate ligament. it will probs take me a few months before i can afford one...

does anyone have any examples of the 35mm on a d5000/90

I got some in my flickr, but from the 35 f/2 + D90
I would love to try the 35 f/1.8 someday

I've got the 35mm f/1.8 on my D200 and it's the only lens which has been on there since I bought them both. Love it, wouldn't mind a go of the 35mm f/2 but I doubt I can afford it at the moment!

Seeing as you have the D5000 i'd say go for it, just post a pic of the big smile on your face when you realise how good it is! I can post a few of my (very amateurish) pics if you want?

It's a great lens for the money, mine cost about £130 second hand off here a few months back

Here's a shot taken with it on my D3000

Here's some with my D200 and D80 (so a much older camera than the D5000)

White man speak the truth, not forked tongue..............

I have a very old 35mm F2, that won`t autofocus with any new camera, guess what, it ain`t a killer.

I sold mine just last week and went back to manual focusing a 50mm 1.8, the 35mm is a great lens and some will argue with me on this but I found it too short for portraits, I just feel the 50mm on an APS-C is an all around better performer than the 35mm.

it is exceptional value for money though, nip into a local and have a play with one before you buy.

Depends on exactly what you want it for but I did have the 50mm 1.8 and now have the 50mm 1.4 AFS and find it perfect length and I am on a crop sensor. 35mm for portraits may not be as flattering as the 50mm or even the 85mm. It is another £120 or so, but the 1.4 AFS 50mm is lovely.

Not on a D90, but here are a few D40 examples...

I ahd one, found it to be a good performenr, but at 50mm equivalent, it was not wide enough for what I wanted (I knew that - but wanted to try it). What I'd like is a 35mm effective focal length on a crop sensor.

I recently got one for my d5000 after askng for some lens advice here. I'm amazed at the results, I love the dof and it is much sharper than the kit lens

My favourite lens bar none, I very rarely use my other lens anymore.

Just to add for the op, I was also considering the 50mm but after having the 35 I'd definately say that 50mm would be a little too long for general about the house use

got one for my D5K, i shoot lots of basketball, (indoors) and its a belter. Highly recommend this lens. The Junior basketball shots in my flickr are 95% with the 35mm.

I'm the exact opposite. Had the 35mm and changed to a 50mm. Just shows it is subjective and down to the individual.

I got mine specifically for taking pictures of my children (2 1\2 + 8 months), not a lot of movement from my little on but catching my toddler in action has proved tricky at times with the kit lens but the 35mm is very fast and has caught some great images even indoors in low light it's fast and accurate.

SOLD !!! lol
My sons the same age 2 1/2 so i think im going to get the 35mm

I got the 35 1.8 for my D90 a couple of months ago and love it. Best purchase I've made in ages. Not only is it fast, it's also super sharp.

Here is a shot I took in the garden with a 100% crop. These are totally unprocessed and straight out the camera jpgs.

Never had my hands on the f/2, but on my D40 the f/1.8 is fantastically sharp wide open and built quite solidly.

Seems as if the price has dropped quite drastically. I bought it for £180, as there weren't any used lenses around yet.

what prices have you seen the 35mm 1.8 for?
I've seen ~£170. Used they go for ~£140. And someone just mentioned £157 for a new one here on the thread (that's the drastic drop).

I know this is a few weeks old, but I've been looking for more info on the 35mm 1.8 as I'm supposed to be going for mine on Fri, and now I can definitely say I'm getting it and I can not wait! :)

It's a great lens for the price and even though I'm having to let go of mine it's given me the sharpest photos I've taken
