What would you replace a 24-70 2.8L with?

Not sure if this is the lens for me. It's what I currently have, along with an 85 1.8. I don't do landscapes normally but more for portraits, but also an all rounder, any suggestions? It's for a Canon 7d.

Sometimes I could do with something a little wider... Sometimes a little longer...(Less for longer). Can't afford to purchase another lens at this moment so would be looking perhaps to replace it, without skimping on quality. Sharp, quiet and fast... Those are the boxes.

Canon 15-85mm EF-S.
It doesn't have fixed aperture but it is a great lens and would cover your slightly wider by slightly longer

alternatively, there's the 18-135mm STM which gets decent reviews

I have a 15-85mm EF-S. It's a very good lens but I'd prefer the much more expensive 24-70mm L mark ii which is said to be the top all-rounder of weddings. The 85mm prime is meant to be a great portrait lens.

The 24-70 may be a top performing lens bit its useless at anything less than 38mm effective field of view on a 7D body which is what the OP is looking for.
 
EFS 17-55 2.8 is fantastic but a little pricey, overall it's my favourite lens. I also have an efs 18-200 which is brilliant for travel & bright light stuff. A few people have slated it but i find it is frequently sharper than my 24-105L! (Yes, both have been micro adjusted......) all down to budget I suppose :-)
 
Think I'd be tempted by the 17-55IS if you are sure you're wanting to get rid of the 24-70. Biggest problem if you can't afford to keep the 24-70 is you're going to loose the longer end with the 17-55 and you'll have a big gap from 55 to 85 mm...

The 15-85 gets good reviews and following on here - might be another option ...

I got my 24-70L with my 7D. If I was to replace it and only consider using it with the 7D then I'd get a Canon 17-55 2.8.
 
The 17-55 without a doubt, there's not too much real world gap between 55 and 85 (if there was there'd be a lens to fit in there* ;))

*the 60mm is a bespoke macro lens designed to do what the 100mm does on FF, so it doesn't really count.

The 17-55 IS is by far the best "general purpose" lens for a Canon crop. I found the 7D + 17-55 combo to be as good as my 6D + 24-105, and was a bit underwhelmed after the upgrade to FF. Having become accustomed to 17-55 goodness on a crop, I was forced to upgrade to a similar lens (24-70 f/2.8) on FF to notice any difference, and even then things remain extremely close.

The 17-55 is a great lens. It may not feel as well built as an "L", but it beats most of the L's I have owned optically.
