Yes
I would like to get an HD video camera to film the wedding services of the weddings I shoot. I know very little about video and I don't want to present the B&G with a video of the service, far from it, but I would like to insert some short (10 seconds or less) clips of it into the slide shows I produce. The camera would need to be small I guess, able to be stuck on a tripod/stand and set running, then just left. Clearly no point in spending thousands on a pro set up, it is purely an add on so, any ideas/recommendations?

I have a friend who shoots mini commercial spots for cable TV on a Canon Vixia HF S30. It shoots HD, good enough for broadcast quality. It's just a little camera that you might see someone using for family vacations. I think it shoots to 32G memory cards and has two slots. I'm not sure if that would be long enough for the whole ceremony but you may get enough for what you're looking to do.

I imagine they have remote control for it also, and I know he does sound as well with an additional mike. Not sure if you were interesting in capturing any sound. I think one of these costs around about $1000 these days.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, looks good to me, I will be picking up some some sound I have an external device for that though.
Its just the ceremony I am after, maybe some first dance, I don't know what the low light performance of an HD camera is these days?

I think you could do an excellent job with your 5DII if you know its limitations and how to work around it. There is also the Panasonic GH2 which many pros use. Both of these cameras are used by wedding video pros to shoot the whole service, so should be fine for what you need.

Thanks Jacob, trouble is, both 5DII's are busy taking stills!! I need this just for a set up and forget. Just to leave it running for the 45 mins or so of the ceremony. It really doesn't need to be that "Pro" I don't want to fire out sub standard obviously but this is not the main focus of what I am doing at all. I am not looking for broadcast quality.

I would say a 60D would be quite good, and you can use your existing EF lenses. I would get a shoulder mount (cheap on off ebay for about $60 to start with) for steady images.

Other option would be a Panasonic GH1 or GH2. You can use your EF lenses via an adaptor. A used GH1 would be the cheapest option.

Whatever you go with budget about another £150 for an external mic.

And thats the cheap end before you have factored in an external recorder or xlr pre amp such as beachtek/juicedlink
