Hi all

I have a canon ID MK IV which I use with a canon 300mm f2.8 lens plus extenders.

I cant make my mind up would I be better upgrading the camera to a IDX and continue as I am doing or I have the option of purchasing a used canon 500mm f4 lens and I am just undecided as to what to do...Would the IDX give a sharper image even tho cropped . than if i used a 500mm lens

Hoping you can help

David

Surely using a 500mm an not having to use a teleconverter which even if minimal will still degrade image quality is the best option, lets not forget that you've already got one of the best DSLRs in your hands only recently superseded by the 1DX

Do you need what the 1DX offers that the 1D4 doesn't? Also will you miss the 1.3 crop factor?

What do you shoot?

Hi David and welcome to the forums. I would spend the cash on the glass, as they say. The quality from your current setup should be fine and I do not believe the upgrade would produce much of a noticeable difference, so I say go for the lens.

Upgrade to the 1DX 100% (and give me the Mark IV, I'm looking for one. Ta!!) Job done;);)

I've a friend who is heavily into wild life and has the 1D4 and is looking to add the 1DX into his bag to so there is certainly merits to it however, he also already has a 600/4 so for you realistically it really needs to be a longer lens first IMO as 300 is just too short in my very limited wild life experience especially when you loose a crop advantage too

How much effort do you have to make to shoot this "wildlife"? If you have to lug your gear around much, I'd much rather lug around a 300/2.8 than a 500/4 any day. The 300/2.8 Mk II plus 1D Mk IV would be pretty much the ideal combo for that situation.
