What would you do? - Simulating candle light with strobe

I have a shoot and need to stand a couple in the center of a circle made up of candles. They are dancing (not moving as its a posed shot) and I want to light the females face very gently with the same colour tone as the candles.

What method would you use?

Gel the flash.

gel a flash is obvious, what kind of modifer would you use?
I was thinking grid spot or a grided softbox although would you light from below with a Key and then add a fill light using the same gel or not?

If you're lighting from below you obviously have to be very careful, as generally it's not going to be at all flattering.

Depends what you want, but I would try using similar to what you suggest. Using the ambient from the candles to create the mood, and then adding in a small amount of light from a softbox or similar to make their faces look 'better'. ie introduce it from a 'normal' higher angle to take away any ugly modelling from the candles.

I pretty much agree. The shot will look false if it isn't lit from pretty much the same angle, i.e. ground level, but will look very unflattering (although of course it may also suit the shot) so I would use a tight gelled honeycomb from below and then mitigate the effect to some extent with another, higher gelled light.
See this shot (post 10). Not quite the same as the only light was from the candles, the subject was stationary etc, but it gives an idea of the lighting effect with the light from below - not posting the shot here as it's a nude.
