Hi guys

Bit of a dilemma - not sure what to do? Been saving up recently... what to do...

Get the Adobe suite (I'm a student so get it cheap for £257)

Keep on saving for the 1D mk III second hand baring in mind I won't have the editing software on the mac.

Does GIMP work on macs??

EDIT:
GIMP is available for OSX, it's a very good photo editor, completely free and there are loads of tutorials out there :)
 
go for the 1D and try to acquire the editing software.

It's freeware, lets you edit/manipulate photos. I gave it a go once and didn't get on well with it to be honest, so went and bought PS.

Hope this helps, and id go for the 1d MkIII

Very similar to photoshop, however, if you've used photoshop it can seem of going from one to the other. Download it, try some tutorials and I am sure you'll get to grips with it. I use it a lot at work as it runs from my portable hardrive :)
 
GIMP may be similar to photoshop (I honestly can't say) but it is horrific to use until you are very used to it. In other words, like a lot of open source programs, user friendliness just went out the window.

Get the camera.
 
I'd go with the camera, there are plenty of good free photo editors around.
 
Get Gimp.... Doh loads of people have repeated that :D :D :D

Camera. Always Camera.

Unless of course you dont take photos but create art using software, then why would you want a camera in the first place?

Definitely get the camera and also PS Elements - its only like £40 and nearly as good as the full PS for image editing.

I've got both and still use Elements for the majority of my image editing work, only really use the full PS for web design - cant get on with gimp at all - it's not easy to learn once you know your way around PS
 
Another :thumbs: for Elements. Also if you google around there are some very good free add-ons for it which give things like layer masks, channel mixer and curves which are otherwise missing. There is enough to keep you happy for a long time - excellent value and doesn't take too much out of your camera fund.
 
If you are on a Mac then iPhoto isn't a bad package. Not as good as Photoshop, or Elements, but you've got it and should handle RAW files. The adjustment tools are pretty comprehensive for what is a free program
 
Gimp is like PS as much as a model T Ford is like a Bentley Arnage. Sure, they've both got a wheel at each corner and get you from A to B but PS will do it far nicer!

Having said that, I would go for the body upgrade and a copy of PSE (which will do a lot of what the full version does for a tiny proportion of the cost). Then again, the student discount on the full PS suite is much more than any doscount you'll get on a body, so you may be better off (financially) plumping for the software package. Prices of 2nd hand 1Ds aren't likely to rise, so another few months' saving could see you with both.

Thats my problem..... When my student card runs out in July... then it goes up to £1349.99 for the same package.
 
what I was about to ask

I'd go for ps cs5 and lightroom3 while they're cheap

a 1d3 will change your life but can hold off a few months
 
Well.... I might have just aquired mac cs3 which is fine by me....
 
You do realise that Photoshop isn't essential for a digital camera owner... right? :thinking:

I exclusively use DPP (and most of the time that is simply to make the RAWs into JPEGs - no more) and feel no need for photoshop. Just a thought.

Indeed... but I'm a Photoshop master now after 6 years of using it on Pc and at uni. :lol: Now I have my mac, and hardly touch the pc. Which is why this decision is so difficult.
 
Initial instinct was to say Elements 8 [you get the full version of Adobe Camera Raw in Bridge CS4 with the Mac version] but as others have pointed out, it might be worth getting the best out of a student discount whilst you still can!
 
You say 'suite'. Does that mean you are going to buy Adobe Creative suite bundle - i.e. Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver etc? Take note that if you do and you want to buy any upgrades in the future, you will have to upgrade ALL of the suite. You cannot upgrade individual applications. A lot of people have been caught out on that.

If I buy via software for students - Photoshop design premium for mac, £257... I can claim for the upgrde to CS 5

Student discount on Lightroom and photoshop bundle cost me just over £200 last year.
Or you can pick up older copies of CS2, CS3 quite cheaply on ebay etc.

yes but you don't edit your images, some people know how to make them better
