What would cause this on photos?

I would say a bit of condensation causing flare, I'm guessing it would have been a marginally cold day judging by the weather, warm hands on a cold lens and all that. There's no way exposure cause that type of flare. Could also have been caused by moisture in your breath or even a wondering finger catching the optics before you setup to compose the image. Next thing could also be a bit of moisture on the sensor, this is quite a common thing when I'm doing long exposures at night to find that I didn't allow the camera to cool down to the temps outside etc.

Then it has to be something temporary on the lens (condensation perhaps) or it has developed a fault of some kind.

I would agree with condensation.
Perhaps warm breath when checking front of camera.
It always clears from the centre.
You often see this on viewfinders in the cold.

Thanks for all the replies. I've been thooper busy so not tried anymore yet. I'll give the lens a good once over with the Brillo and Vim tomorrow and give it another whirl)

I'm sure we can sort out some cracking flare in a few weeks time :D I find a polishing mop on a wireless hammer drill great for cleaning lens and sensors :D of course for the sensor you need to make sure you use the smaller mops with hammer function  :rules:

seeing the location it could be something to do with the Holy Ghost.

Holy aberration?
