What would be your IDEAL lenses line-up?

Yes
As on the title. I am interested in hearing opinions. I am in the process of rethinking my lens lineup. I currently own

zooms
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6
Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Canon 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5
Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8

primes
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Lensbaby 2.0

Both 1.4x and 2x TCs

I have a lot to wish for with my current lenses. First of all, I never use the kit lens. It's practically new. As you can see, i am lacking a good walkaround lens, something to cover the place of the kit lens and the 35-105, which is a bit dated.

So, I'm thinking of some possible line-ups.

A.
Sigma 10-20
Canon 24-70 2.8 (instead of the 24-105 f/4 IS?)
Sigma 120-300 2.8
Sigma 30mm 1.4
Canon 85mm 1.8
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro

B.
Sigma 10-20mm
Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS
Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8
Sigma 120-300 f/2.8
Sigma 30mm 1.4
Canon 85mm 1.8
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro

These two line-ups are affordable, and probably feasible to get by the end of the year, if I buy something new every 2-3 months, with the 85mm being the last one to buy.

My IDEAL (and still feasible, but for a 2-3 year span) lens line up would be.

C.
Sigma 10-20
Canon 24-70mm f2.8
Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8
Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8
Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6
Canon 35mm f/1.4
Canon 85mm f/1.2
Canon MP-E 65mm

The 300-800 is a lens I WILL buy, in the next couple of years. I fell in love with it, without even looking at it. I just saw the results.

What would be YOUR ideal lineup, and why?

Will go and think a bit about that but for now I will say the following:

Cut all EF-S lenses from your lists of immediate to future purchases.

Chances are you will move on to bigger bodies and eventually go "Full Frame" so start now and buy only EF or EF mount 3rd party lenses.

Just been through this exercise and it can be painful:naughty:

My lot....
sigma 10-20mm
Canon 24-105mm f/4L
Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro
Canon 50mm f1.8

I suppose I need a Canon 17-40mm to complete the range......
and to own a 300mm or 400mm f/2.8(dream)

all the best...

For Full frame:

Nikon 14-24
Nikon 24-70
Nikon 70-200

Nikon Nifty Fifty,
Nikon 105 VR
Nikon 300 and 400 primes.

For DX:

Sigma 10-20
Nikon 17-55
Nikon 70-200

Nikon Nifty Fifty
Nikon 105 VR
Nikon 200 f2
Nikon 300

:)

My lot....
sigma 10-20mm
Canon 24-105mm f/4L
Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro
Canon 50mm f1.8

I suppose I need a Canon 17-40mm to complete the range......
and to own a 300mm or 400mm f/2.8(dream)

all the best...

Looks like a very nice line-up.

I would suggest the 16-35mm II over the 17-40mm and upgrading the 50mm to the f/1.4.

My Ideal lineup... ( will get there one day )

Nikon 14-24mm
Nikon 24-70mm ( Got this :D )
Nikon 70-200mm VR2 ( when Nikon update the 70-200 to reduce the vignette, until then my 80-200AFS )
Nikon 50mm F1.4
Nikon 85mm F1.4 ( got this :D )
Nikon 105mm VR
Nikon 200mm F2 ( Really want this... )
Nikon 300mm F2.8
Nikon 600mm F4

I'm a long way off acheiving this, but if my lottery numbers come up I'll be on the phone to Kingsley faster than you can say NAS :D

Woodsy why is that 200/2 only in the DX list??? That lens deserves to be on full frame too :D

I've actually considered selling my Sigma 300/2.8 and splashing out on one of those 200/2 lenses. But then I loose even more reach :(

Pete

My list is easy: Every L prime ever made and a few non-L equivalents. (50 and 85 specifically...)

Add 2 more 70-200/2.8 IS zooms and we have a deal:D:D:D

P.S. A 16-35 Mk II would not be bad either...

Right here we go.

Canon 16-35mm F2.8 L MkII - have the sigma 17-35mm F.28-4 EX but its a little soft at times.
Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L - Already own
Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS L - Already own

Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro Di - don't do enough macro to replace this.
Canon 50mm F1.4 - Just acquired.

1.4x & 2x Extender.

Dont do anything bigger than 400mm to justify anything else tbh.

A very valid point sir! In answer, I have no idea! Must have forgotten to put it down. Either way, I WANT ONE!

EDIT: You have the 80-200 AF-S?!?!?! How much did that set you back? and where on earth did you get it?!!?!?!

Some very nice set-ups there. I haven't thought of dropping the EF-S lenses actually, that's not a bad point.

Now that the Nikon guys have mentioned the 200mm f/2, do us Canon guys have a price on the Canon equivalent?

I don't think there is a Nikon shooter that could ever say they don't want a 200/2

Yup I have the AF-S version. I bought it off Hacker as he was silly enough to go out and replace it with the 70-200... The 80-200 is so sharp you could cut yourself on the shots with it... Even with the 1.4x Sigma convertor on it ( that shouldn't work but does )

I'll keep that in mind Anton.....
(mind you, the 16-35mm will take a while..)

HAHA, nice work mate :D

I have the D version, and that is really nice. a little on the loud side, but who cares tbh! :D

You chaps have a 200/2.8, but not an f/2. nvm eh :D

Ahh to have the cash to get most of that stuff! Though saying that, the 17-55 is lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvely :D

Nikkor 14-28 f:2.8 (Would be nice)
Nikkor 28-70 f:2.8 (Want this next after the 70-200)
Nikkor 70-200 f:2.8 (Need this urgently since I sold my 80-200)
Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Fisheye
Nikkor 50mm f:1.4 (Got this!:D)
Nikkor 85mm f:1.4 (Want this eventually)
Nikkor 200mm f:2 (Got this! :D:D:D)
Nikkor 400mm f:2.8 (If someone were treating me)

TC-14e II (Got this! :D)
TC-17e II (Would be nice)
TC-20e II (Would be nice)

That lot, along with a D3 to compliment my D300 wouldn't make too bad a kit bag.

I was only thinking about this last night....

Sigma 12-24
Canon 24-70 2.8 (And a 17-40 f4 for light wondering dream on)
Canon 70-200 2.8 IS USM L/Sigma 120-300 2.8 Still undecided
Canon 15mm Fisheye
Canon 24mm TSL
*Dream* 400 2.8 *Dream*

Well if we're including 'future' lenses - I quite fancy a

6-800mm f1

But it'll have to be no more than 3lbs in weight, 8" long, cost under £1,000, be totally free of distortion, with a level and phenomenonly high resolution

May be a few years to wait yet then

Wait untill NRI lenses come out. (admitedly, not for a damn long time yet though!)

I would say

For cropped sensor

canon 10-22mm

canon 24-70mm F2.8L

Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS L

Canon 100-400mm F2.8 L

Canon 50mm F1.2

For FF sensor

Canon 16-35mm F2.8

canon 24-70mm F2.8L

Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS L

Canon 100-400mm F2.8 L

Canon 50mm F1.2

But at the end of the day i hardly ever use my 70-300mm so i guess having the 70-200 and the 100-400 is pointlless. Oh well.

Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 AF-S
Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 AF-S
Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 AF-S VR
Nikon 200-400mm f4 AF-S VR
Sigma 300mm-800mm f5.6 HSM

Nikon 10.5 mm f2.8 Fisheye
Nikon 24mm f3.5 PC-E
Nikon 28mm f1.4
Nikon 45mm f2.8 PC-E
Nikon 50mm f1.4
Nikon 60mm f2.8 Macro AF-S
Nikon 85mm f1.4
Nikon 105mm f2.8 Macro AF-S VR
Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro HSM
Nikon 200mm f2 AF-S VR
Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF-S VR
Nikon 400mm f2.8 AF-S VR
Nikon 500mm f4 AF-S VR
Nikon 600mm f4 AF-S VR

That lot would keep me happy. Now wheres that lottery ticket.

well can i not dream

i actually mean f4-5.6

Dreaming with you mate!

as DD said a 6-1000mm F1 would be nicer!

Canon 10-22
Canon 17-40L
Canon 24-70L
Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS
Canon 100-400
Sigma 150mm Macro
Canon 300 f/2.8
Canon 500 f/4
1.4x and 2x TC

And for full frame the same but swap the 10-22 with a Sigma 12-24

That would cover me for pretty much any eventuality and actually be a feasable lineup to get over a few years.

The EF 200 f2 is 4500 grand.

Canon also used to do a 200 1.8 though they are like gold dust now.

Im getting fairly close to my ideal lens setup now, think the 300 2.8 will be next, would like a 400 2.8 but its a heavy beast, would also love a 1200 but rocking horse droppings are easier to find ;) a 500 F4L just so i had a slightly lighter alternative for taking abroad as well maybe ;)

What i have,

50 F1.8 II
17-40 F4L
100-400L
600 F4L

both converters.

Still a bit missing...the abiLity though :'(...next year maybe:shake:

Oh quit your modesty, you are blushing:p:$

Did canon do this shooting at your place?

I think I'm well covered with my 40D

Canon 10-22mm
Canon 24-105 F4 L IS
Canon 70-200 F4
Canon 100-400

Most of my stuff is sport or car related

>16-35 2.8L mkII - Assuming I end up with a full-frame digi, if not the 10-22 I have now will do fine.

>50 1.4 - 1.8 I have now is good, but focusing in low light annoys me. Would have to research the 1.4 a bit more and see if its worth it.

>24-70 2.8L

>Either 85 1.2L or 135 2L - Not researched too much yet due to the fact that I have exactly no cash.

>70-200 2.8L IS - maybe, though I'm pretty happy with the f4 as its sharper than a sharp thing on Tuesday (a notoriously sharp day of the week) by zoom standards.

>300 2.8L

>Both converters.

Lot of ifs, buts and maybes in there. Probably won't end up with any of them, as I'll have completely changed direction by the time I have the cash to spend..

Canon 70-200 F4
Canon 100-400

Most of my stuff is sport or car related

Do you find these lenses fast enough for sports and motorsports? Because I was thinking instead of getting the 50-150 f/2.8, I should get the 70-200 f/4. But I think I would miss the f/2.8. Getting the 70-200 f/2.8 is not an option because I already have the 120-300 f/2.8 and I need something lighter.
