+1 for Nextgen. It also has a Lightroom plugin to add to published services. It makes organising and altering albums very easy

I just use the built in wordpress galleries. I create portfolio items and then my theme serves them up. There are lots of options with how you then present them - thumbnails which link to images a bit like this:

or the way I link to do it is just have them stacked like in all my galleries here when you click on and portfolio item

I find that especially on smartphones and tablets its a much nicer experience

I like the way images pop out over the background if clicked on but not sure about the slideshow, image not very large.

If you click on the word gallery you get to see all the gallery's on one page if you click on slide show they all go into slideshows....
So not know if it can be changed

You can make the nextgen ones look how you like if you play a bit with the CSS of your site or use third party plugins. I've used it in two different ways on my sites.

On my animal photography site I use nextgen as the gallery management then an addon to display them in a grid.

On my landscape site I used nextgen and just styled up the albums and thumbnails with trial and error through the CSS stylesheet.

The one I used was Justified Image Grid from CodeCanyon - cost $20 but money well spent from my perspective, I could never achieve that myself.
