What used dSLR to go for - Canon 40D or Nikon D90?

So i'm starting a fresh again and i used to have a canon 40D which i loved, however, i'm not tied to any brand now and i have friends who use nikon, so i can borrow kit from them hopefully lol. Anyway, the Nikon D90 just comes into budget hopefully, but i really don't know which way to go. The 40D i loved but it's getting dated now (which really isn't a problem), but the D90 is throwing 720P HD video which is appealing, and it's 12.2mp.

I think the only way i could decide is to ask you lot which you'd go for and why>?

i love nikons so i would say the D90 however its video quality is very poor, so if your planning on much video, go for the d7000
 
Difficult to call really. I'm a canon bod so would say the 40D.

From an independent view point, you've had a 40D and really liked it / got on with it so you know how it works and have no issues with it, but of your mates have Nikon and you can borrow lenses etc, then this has a major influence on the choice as it'll allow you a good try before you buy, or a long "borrow".
 
I was a canon man and have owned a number of L glass (100mm 2.8L, 70-200L and 24-70L) and i walked in to jessops just to buy a rocket blower and walked out £3000 lighter after picking up a nikon. Id say nikon D90 over the 40D
 
Get your mitts around a D90 and see how it feels. It would be a disappointing switch if you find you can't get on with nikon's ergonomics.

If you liked the 40D but want video, maybe look into a 60D? It's more expensive and in some peoples view a backwards step in some areas (plastic body etc. (but then the D90 is plastic bodied as well)), but you've got 1080p video and the swivel screen.

There aren't any bad choices, you'd obviously get along well with the 40D as you've had one before and the D90 is indisputably an excellent choice as well, so I'd say just get the one you feel like getting, don't get too bogged down with comparing the specs or what people on here say. But if you decide on going with another brand, definitely make sure to try them out first, some people seem have real problems trying to adapt to a different brand.

I am new to slr cameras and bought a D90 last week, I am finding it very user friendly with the menus etc.

It's no good asking us, most are obviously biased.

You need to handle both and see which YOU prefer.
