Ive decided to sell up my 400d gear and upgrade but im stuck in a rut, im torn between the 40d and 50d, ive had positive comments about both but im still undecided....... Advice would be apprieciated ;)

Well the 50D is really just an updated version of the 40D so much of the decision will be cost I would have thought. I guess you need to ask yourself if you think the updates justify the extra cost for what you do.

Expect you have probably seen the site below, but if not is quite useful as it compares the 40D and 50D.

One other point is there are a lot of rumours about a 60D being released at some point in the near future. I wouldn't like to say how true these are but if correct it would of course drop the price of the 50D.

Sure you'll love either, I did what you did to a 40d. Handling and ergonomics much better, ISO better, FPS etc.

Some people on here have gone 40d>50d, think there are some threads on it.

If you did go to 40D you could use the money saved on new lenses (not sure what you have or if needed).

Good luck, you'll either I'm sure.

I agree with AKR, either camera will feel like a good upgrade, even the 40d with the same sensor as your 400d. I made the 400d to 40d step, and find the handlling, the ISO performance, the larger viewfinder, etc all a good step up. Personally I wouldn't want to go back to an XXXd body again. The extra savings over a 50d would allow more budget for other lenses. On the plus side for the 50d, the extra MP allow much more "croppability".

The micro adjustment of the 50D and the much better resolution rear screen is worth the extra IMO

i have the 40d, very sturdy and capable camera. you could see if there's a decent 2nd hand one knocking about on here. i'd say put the extra to a lens. a 40d may be the slightly lesser model than a 50d (debatable to some), but a 50d is the lesser from a 7d, which is the lesser compared with a 5dII, which is the lesser compared to a 1 series. Then you've got those 30k mamiya jobs....see, where do you stop?
