I really don't see your problem, if you don't like the poll don't answer it, if you don't like the thread don't comment on it, simples.

And if you don't like the comments then ignore them, still no need to be abrupt and patronising.

Just calm down, anger gets us nowhere.

Anger? who's angry? {Sigh} life's too short, you carry on on your own.

I'm an amateur. Sometimes enthusiastic.

Same here. There was no option for this. [sarcasm]Maybe there is a subconsious level of elitism here?[/sarcasm]

Edit..... dammmmnnnnn I should read all the thread. Some people are taking this waaaaaaaaayyyyyy to serious!

Amatuer by definition is not making an earning from whatever it is, regardless of how good you are.

There are many amatuers that are much better than some proffessionals out there. If you don't like the tag of amatuer photographer, that is your problem, not the English languages'. The 2 ways around this are 1) get over it! or 2) start earning money from it.

Myself, I am an amatuer in pretty much every respect of the word. I got some good pics with a bridge camera but now on a proper DSLR I get very few I keep.

But there is a second definition of amateur

'One lacking the skill of a professional, as in art' - here

or, put another way

'Someone who practices an art or science unskillfully, a dabbler'
(Penguin English Dictionary)

And now I'm going to shut up ;)

but that isn't how the poll was posted, they obviously wanted to know who earns from photography and too what degree.

I see no mention of skill in the poll at all.

seems to be a few people getting their knickers in a twist over something so harmless. If you don't like it, don't post, simple :)

Definately just an enthusiastic (if not very talented) amateur :)

I don't see anything wrong with the poll, there seems to be negative connotations attached to being labelled an 'amateur', especially when it's taken out of context. For me, I see 'amateur' and see the literal meaning, that they're not paid full-time to do it. That doesn't make their skillset or experience any less, and in terms of this, some of my favourite photographers are either students or amateurs.

I'm lucky in that I started as a hobby, then went part-time, and now work full-time with some amazing opportunities.

Enthusiastic amatuer happy with that :)
Pete

Definitely an enthusiastic amateur - never ever want to do it for a living, far too stressful (having done a couple of small weddings for friends and a few other events for work) and I hate post processing with a passion!
