Just looking for a snapshot of the membership, are you:-

  1. A seasoned Pro, photography is your fulltime occupation.
  2. Photography is your 2nd job, perhaps at weekends.
  3. An enthusiastic amateur.
  4. Doing some sort of photography course, college, Uni etc.

I am an enthousiastic amateur - I shoot for fun and to have something more than a - hopefully fond - memory of whatever I was looking at or enjoying while taking pictures, be it a fragrant home-cooked dinner, a heart-warming sunset or just that annoying bird that woke me up.

compared to a lot on here I am a crap photographer, but no where as bad as some I know off, and these are so called pro-wedding photographers !!

Enthusiastic amatuer.

Shoot for fun and enjoyment really
It's a hobby and i hope one to enjoy for a long time yet:thumbs:

I'm an unenthusiastic amateur. No option for me:(

I'm doing a course at college but I still shoot for a magazine?

Enthusiatic amateur... my sig says it all !

One day I will take a photo that I think "Yeah - I want to hang that on my wall".
Hasn't happened yet, though :(

I can now happily answer:

Photography is my 2nd job, weekends etc.

First wedding as primary on the 12th, another in April and a 3rd in discussion. Add to that a list of 5-8 studio shoots and 1 location shoot.

A crap one.......

Just because I don't make a living from my photography doesn't make me an amateur.

I really hate that description. I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER!

As I was setting up my last exhibition they asked me if I made a living from my photography. I said no, so they said we'll call you an amateur photographer then. I said definitely not - I was having an exhibition!!!!

When I clicked on the thread I was expecting to see categories of photography to choose from not a forced distinction between professional, amateur and numpty - so I just think a poll like this reinforces an unnatural distinction.

Just because you don't make a living from it doesn't make you a bad photographer, just as being a so called professional doesn't mean you are a good photographer.

OK, climbing down from my soapbox now :D

.

"rubbish but learning" category............

Amatuer with very little enthusiasm at the moment

Can i have an option for 'not a very good one' please?

I have regular photographic work outside of my main job, so i went with that option. But i am still an enthusiastic amateur too, i still like to takes photos for my own pleasure. (not that i have had much time left for it lately)

:)

Yes it does! That's exactly what it means! :bonk:

It's a measure of whether you draw your living from it, not of quality. Sherlock Holmes is described in some of his stories as an "Amateur Detective"...

I'm with Bruja on this (and I think he is refering to the conotations that calling someone an amateur has associated to it). I also thought enthusiastic amateur but consider myself a better photographer than a number of "pro's" I know.

:plusone:

We are all PHOTOGRAPHERS, aren't we? Why pigeon hole?

Crappy poll form my seat too.

Id suggest you need to add experienced hobbyist to the list gramps.

Amateur does conjure the wrong impression whatever a dictionary says.

..although, I suppose I could vote number two and have kept quiet… hayho.

Just because some people don't know what 'professional' or 'amateur' means doesn't make the poll wrong!

Just because I don't make a living from my photography doesn't make me an amateur.

Of course it does!
By the very nature of its meaning you are going to be pro, semi-pro or amateur, I added the educational aspect on top of that for my interest.

Just because you don't make a living from it doesn't make you a bad photographer, just as being a so called professional doesn't mean you are a good photographer.

No one is suggesting that not being 'Pro' makes you bad, or vice versa, the poll is just an attempt to establish the make up of the forum

Why do people have to even argue over the poll? :cuckoo:

Take the poll or pass - if it really bugs you, start a poll of your own! :)

Hey, your the one looking for a snap shot of TP folk, I’m just stating it as I see it ...and joining in with your thread giving you my snap.

So these things happen! no need to throw it in our face.... If you want it to be a more accurate snap shot why not take our opinions as part, nowt wrong with that.

The mods will even adjust the poll if you want.

Okay, thank you for your contribution, I'm not throwing anything in anybody's face and if I come across that way I apologise.
It's just that it seems to me a simple poll, you either make money at it or you don't - sure I could have gone further ... are you Welsh? ginger? female? don't know how to hold the camera yet?
BUT that wasn't what I wanted to know, it's simple not all-encompasing.
Thank you everyone for your contribution!!

I started 6 months ago, and already Ive upgraded my camera and lenes, I am just starting to see results, I can now use a camera in full manuel mode so Im pretty impressed with myself to be honest with you

3. With the intention to step up to 2. soon; long term goal being 1.

I agree. But I wont make the last jump though, already filled that with something else.

heck no worries. :)

Just adjust the title a bit maybe then ... Let us know exactly what your question is, because i didn't get any of that money bit from it.

Welsh? ginger? female, lol dig dig...

Which fits "When its not raining, I'm not working & it gets me out of the house type" then thats me....

 all this equipment & no time to hardly use it:$

3 I guess. Its my hobby, but I've started getting small paid jobs from it now - which I use to help fund the cost of the equipment.

Why do people have to even argue over the poll? :cuckoo: Because It's Important To Us!

Perhaps you should have made the intentions of your poll clear from the start then.

And, as you later say, you weren't getting at anyone, why such an abrupt and patronising response to my comments?

It was clear, the questions were simple and clear, nothing to misunderstand, just that some people want to change the poll.

And, as you later say, you weren't getting at anyone, why such an abrupt and patronising response to my comments?

Abrupt? Patronising? Who had to get down off her soapbox?
I really don't see your problem, if you don't like the poll don't answer it, if you don't like the thread don't comment on it, simples.

A non-photographer who appreciates looking at stunning photos!

Haven't voted!;)
