Yes
Going to Mull beginning September 2025 have lots of camo gear to wear but looking for a recommendation for trousers to lay down amongst the rocks and weed.
Not cheap but maybe middle of the range stuff..
Thanks,
Russ.

We went to Scotland a year or 2 back in September. Was roasting for the first few days in Edinburgh. By the time we had gone up to Skye and then back to Fort William. The missus was by extra clothes as she had not packed anything warm enough

Camo not so much of an issue... Rustling much more so. I'm from Newcastle so shorts are just fine apart from the occasional January day :coat:

50 years ago when I worked in a backpacking equipment shop, we used to sell woollen breeches for the more traditional types...just thinking...those and long green socks?

I use military surplus goretex waterproof trousers with bib and braces. Cheap, effective and if too hot Can be opened up to let the air in

Hi, yes waterproof and able to take the wear and tear from laying on the rocks and in the salty weed. Just been looking at https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/16045841/peter-storm-men-s-insulated-trousers-16045841
Bear in mind Peter Storm are low in quality compared to others.

I'd be looking for Craghoppers Goretex as a minimum.

I’m sure you’ll get a wide range of suggestions. The trousers in your link look fine, but may be best to find some local suppliers and try some pairs as sizing etc varies considerably. I wish I could still crawl around in such conditions and I am younger than you.

Enjoy Mull.

My go to, especially for Mull, are Craghopper Kiwi Pro. I don’t like waterproof trousers when doing otters as often waterproof trousers rustle and don’t stretch. Kiwi Pros are light enough that they dry quickly.

I can recommend Hoggs of Fife.

I have several pairs of their moleskin trousers which are tough, long lasting and very comfortable.

Have a look at Rohan. Got a great pair in the Long Preston shop for 75% off, so look for their sales.

Would a small tarp be an alternative possibility?

I must refer you to THIS post... :P

Good choice. Shorts or a kilt will just leave bare flesh for midges.

What did you end up with?
I actually didn't have to spend money, my son bought a pair of Jack Pyke trouser online, unfortunately he bought a size to big so gave them to me, will do the job of laying/sitting on the shoreline. Thanks to all who have replied. Russ.

Result!!!

Irony ..Russ I've been looking at Jack Pyke over trousers for a while .lol I'm actually sat typing in a couple of their JP tops. I really like the materials they use and the camo colour and seem to be good value too

That said..........I've been using sortschief outers for yonks now, my trousers haven't crumbled yet after years of mud scrubbling with hares and deer even with the added hardship of cotswold scree.

The bit I really like abouth them is they have a full length double zip on the outside of each leg...which to me a genius bit of design........If I get to hat whilst stalking /walkiing I can unzip .it also means I can step in and out of them with big boots on...................a shout out there for keen revel iv

Jees I've just chatted to Shaz...my currant sportschief gear must be at the very least 10years old. has to be more............and i've absolutely batttered those outers.....my first lot I still have that's 3 decades in now................. still used regularly for lotty planting and grafting

Sportschief are canadian hunting gear.hard to find in blighty I actually think of my new set as not so well made as the older gear, but I guess they have proved me very wrong

I use the Jack Pyke Trousers (not the overtrousers) for walking my dog in all weathers. The material is soft and really comfortable and they are waterproof. The main downside for me is the poor quality zips which give up the ghost well before the trousers do. However, I probably use them much more than most users would. In the colder months I also use trousers from the Country Sports section of Decathlon. These have a very warm lining and are also waterproof and probably much more strongly built than the Jack Pyke Trousers, great for winter, but too hot in Summer. The main issue here is to buy the right trousers as they sell very similar looking cheaper and less waterproof variants as well.
