Hi all, although I have been on this site for 5 years I'm still new to photography as I started it up and stopped, but I want to get back into it and have ordered a D7200, I have a redsnapper tripod at the mo but if I line something up into focus as soon as I let go it moves a little bit, now is that the case in all tripods if not can anyone please recommend me a good tripod and head.

I was going to ask the same question. Without infringing on your thread it would be good to have recommendations across price ranges as well.
 
Is it the tripod or the head that allows the camera to move?

So many tripods and heads that it's impossible to recommend one combo, much depends on budget and how portable you need it to be.

Searching this forum will provide much useful information, would say get a head that utilises Arca Swiss plates and make sure it locks down solid.

My personal choice for tripods are Gitzo, expensive and sure some will say overpriced, probably right, but they are really excellent. Heads not so much and others such as Kirk, Markins, Arca and RRS are much better, loads of others to choose from too.

An alternative I have chosen is Feisol.

I recommend their top of the line Elite CF 3 sections tripods
and their 70mm ball heads. Very good price quality ratio.

I have read good things about them, unfortunately due to recent events I believe the UK distributor is no longer replenishing their stock
Therefore likely to be more expensive from the remaining European supplier due to the value of the pound against the euro,
 
I recently bought a Sirui T2204X and K20X ball head. I've got a small travel tripod by them and have been impressed with it so bought this larger one to replace my Giottos. My main reason for changing was because I wanted an Arca compatible head and smaller folded size. I was considering a Gitzo but for my use this is great fro half the price.
 
I found the best way to test any tripod is to fully extend it (with camera) and try in shop with remote shutter release to see if there is any movement.(shutter slap). Tripods are as varied as any photographic equipment and it depends on where it is being used. One for a studio would not be suitable for going on a hike for example due to the weight

I can confirm this is an excellent tripod and ball head obtained at a decent price.
 
When I had a wobbly head, it turned out I needed to tighten something.... Anyway, we love 3 Legged Thing. After sales service is stellar and their kit is brilliant too. And no, I don't work for them!

I had a carbon 3LT Brian, I used it for a weeks trip to New York then sold it as I couldn't get on with it. I now have a MeFoto Globetrotter (4 leg section / asian market) and like it better than the 3LT.

The other option is the ET-2204X which is basically the same combo but with clamps for the legs rather than twist rings.
 
Another vote for Feisol - did a lot of searching for a landscape tripod and was happy with my final choice.

It is very sturdy but also light and very compact with my Arca head fitted.

I had to buy online and it came from outside the UK (from France I think - it was a while ago) but it arrived in a couple of days.

I have the CT-3442 model.

I read the redsnapper are pretty good. You sure You can't fix the issue?
 
Just recently purchased a Mefoto Globetrotter, really sturdy build and they have different versions depending on the use (travel tripod etc).....they also come in different colours [emoji23]
 
The camera shifting a bit when you take your hands off it is a function of many things. First you have to support the weight of camera and lens at some distance away from the centre of gravity. If it was in balance it wouldn't move, however wobbly your tripod. That's why long heavy lenses have a tripod foot of their own. If your tripod head has the kind of quick release plate which can slide back and forth a little you can get longer ones which can slide a lot more. That lets you shift the point of support under the centre of gravity of camera plus lens. The perfect and much more expensive solution is a gimbal mount. Depending on where your droop or wobble problem is coming from it might be better and cheaper to change your type of head than buy a whole new tripod. Then there are measures you can take to stiffen up your tripod, such as reduce the height of the centre column, make sure the rotational and vertical column movements are securely tightened down, hang a weight from the bottom of the centre column.

They have serviced it for free after I didn’t realise what salt water and sand could do to it after time, replaced my lost bag for free, replaced a leg that suffered at my hands and a hook that I lost. So, that’s what good after sales service looks like - of course, the tripod works.

I have a Manfrotto too… they are very different. I think Brian is much more versatile than my Manfrotto CF tripod. Each to their own.
