What tripod

I use that tripod with the junior geared head with a gripped 7d and 100-400, stable as he'll and great piece of kit.

Giottos Vitruvian. Got one a couple of weeks ago and it's brilliant. Very small (40cm) and light (1.5kg) and takes my 5D with big 70-200 f/2.8 lens no prblem. Ball head is built on and is decent.

I have a 190xdb lying around somewhere and its by no means a lightweight travel friendly tripod.

As for the ball head options, it depends on your budget mate. The "pro" ball heads like the Markins Q3 and RRS ones dont' come cheap but they are the buy good buy once type.

Cheaper ones I can only recommend the redsnapper RSH-12 ball head from recent experience. Pretty decent for 50 quid or so, but weighs 600grams.

It might be worth checking out the 3legged thing.

MF 190 in alloy is a good enough tripod, but it's not very light and not very tall. Extending the centre column negates much of the reason for using a tripod in the first place.

Need to define your needs a bit more, and budget. A good quality tripod, light and strong, and a ball head that is precise and secure, tends to cost a bit more than people think.

If budget is not the sole issue then I would opt for a Benro tripod, I bought a Benro Travel angel C-269 with a ball head and have never looked back, awesome tripod for its size and weight, it's fairly expensive but worth every penny!

I was going to say Benro, but I think people get fed up with hearing that from me ;) Very high quality and brilliant value if you buy from ebay (quite a lot more if you buy from Warehouse Express etc).

Travel Angels are brilliant, very light, small and strong. I have the C-257 with J-2 head and it's top drawer  Recommended supplier here http://stores.ebay.com/DCs-Photography-Store Almost too much choice

NB Other brands are available! Also check Feisol and Triopo!

Aye, I bought from dcstuffs in the end. Absolute bargain! Didn't get stung with customs fees either! I guess there's always that small risk though. With customs charges though, it'd probably still be cheaper than buying from the UK.

Thanks for all your advice , I did go and look at the 190prob but found it to heavy and as im new to photography didnt want to spend to much as I want to purchase a new lens also, So today I purchased a Giottos 9351B Pro Tripod which hopefully is a good starting point,

thanks all

I got the Giotto's MTL9531B & a Giottos mh7001 ball head for £112 delivered (next dayat that & all brand spanking new thanks to WE)...

Im 6'3 & with the centre columm fully extended & with my D700 & MB-D10 on it I would need a box to stand on it just to see thru the view finder....

When I was looking I was also looking at a manfrotto (with the do it all centre columm) then looked at the Giotto's which was a lot cheaper & iirc lighter as well & most of all a lot cheaper....

Also went an got the carrybag for it as well....

Still aint got around to using it properly thou - but then again that day may come - hopefully...

So in my opinion you got a good tripod there

You'll have to let me know how you get on with it Mike. My crappy tripod is falling apart on me and i desperately need a hlaf decent one, one that allows the camera to get low to the ground.

How far do the legs open out with your new one mate?
