I have just brought a new Canon DSLR and want to get a tripod, am looking to spend around £100-£150 and have been recommended a Manfrotto, but which one should I go for, or is there another brand I should look at.

Also where is the best place to buy them ?

I'd recommend the Manfrotto 055XPROB. It's not the lightest tripod (it's made of the usual aluminium) however the build-quality is superb and it's a pretty solid piece of gear. Mine has served me well for the last year or so, and I've no intention of upgrading it anytime soon.

I got mine for £109 delivered.

Don't forget to look at the redsnaper tripods. The guy that sells them is a member on here and often has discounts for TP members. Check out his thread in the traders section.

another vote here for the redsnapper, joe the owner is a top chap and he does give tp members a 10% discount, i went for thr tri-283 tripod and ballhead, great kit and comes in a nice padded bag too..........

I too have the Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. Not only is it sturdy but the centre shaft can be lifted up and swung sideways to get a camera down to ground level. Some tripods don't allow one to get a camera to ground level.
I have a couple of heads ,the quick release pistol grip 322RC2, and the 804RC2 head which I prefer for a couple of reasons The pistol grip one won't get the camera in some positiond due to the design where as the 804RC2 has a 3 way head and a huge bonus it turns 360% with a calibration scale, absolutely essential for those panoramic shots where the camera has to stay on the same level plane. I would definately say the 804RC2 head is the one to go for.

When deciding about tripods couple of things to think about, do you want a walkabout lightweight or a heavier studio type. Second I alway recommend testing a tripod fully extended to see how steady it is when taking a photo, camera shutter slap can actually make a feeble tripod fully extended move. So when looking do take your camera and try the tripod in this position.

iThe Manfrotto 055XPROB is one the heavy side which is an advantage if being used on a windy day but
not an all day walkabout tripod

never used a manfrotto before but my velbon sherpa 435r rocks, love it with a passion.

Got myself a Redsnapper one after seeing how well they are rated on here. Was also on there specials £50 for a tripod and 3-way head. Build quailty seems excellent.

I got really into buying a travel tripod for the summer (and forever after), so if you're interested I documented the journey (sorry, bad pun) over on another forum:

I have to say I LOVE my tripod so much - possibly a little too much for a few bits of carbon fibre - but it will be with me forever so I believe after all my research that investing on something first class up front made sense.

It is beyond your budget, but have a good think as to why you've picked that budget. Could you save off buying that next lens and put that towards a decent tripod - the last thing you want is to be out and wish you had your pod with you and the only reason you don't is cos it's too heavy/cumbersome.

I'd recommend the Manfrotto 055XPROB

I've owned the older 055PROB model for five years and it's handled everything I've thrown at it with aplomb. There is the odd occasion I've thought I should have spent a little more for the carbon fibre version, but I'm still happy.

The X's swinging column trick is quite natty though - I could see myself using that.

Had a Manfrotto 055CB for many years, still going strong and rock solid, all parts are available as spares and can be totally rebuilt if you so wish

For travel I have a Velbon Ultra Luxi F, think its discontinued now, but there is a modern day replacement in the Ultra Maxi L

All depends what you want it for really, but those two get my vote paired with a decent ballhead (friction control and a Q/R is worth paying the extra for)
Been using a Cullmann Magnesit for some time and its very well constructed as you would expect from a German made product

Have you fully extended all the legs?

Was looking at reviews/recommendations for either a manfrotto 055 or 190 tripod and saw that which did make me larf....
