What triggers you to go shooting?

What would you say is usually what prompts/motivates you to go shooting? Getting your hands om some new gear, being inspired by a photo, reading about a new technique or something completely different? I'm interested to know what triggers you to go shooting?

And can you share any good stories about when this last happened?

PS: First time here, seen some fantastic photos - now I want to get to know the people :)

Thanks.

How about money and desperation?

Or maybe something more artistic. ;)

Shh, photography is a highly respected field in society - when do we ever have to worry about money? ;).

But seriously - when you had your last shoot, what triggered it?

But seriously - when you had your last shoot, what triggered it?

That was yesterday (and I'm on my way out again in a minute when I finish my lunch), for a personal project documenting my suburb (St Kilda) and Luna Park - which turns 100 years old this December.

What triggered it? I enjoy street photography, and I wanted a long term local project to work on between other things. I like living in St Kilda, despite the invasion of new developments and apartment blocks, and I think the history of the area and the people are worthy of being documented. So, it seemed like the perfect subject.

Very cool. Was the project inspired by someone elses work or did you just figure it out yourself?

Easy question. I never really had the time to indulge in my photography and try new things until I became a government budget cut last year. With time on my hands I have been discovering whole new areas of photography, much of it inspired by this forum, and I am loving it! It's like being a beginner again, 45 odd years after my first camera, so now have unbounded enthusiasm again :)

Well, until I get a job that is ;)

When I have the time!

As soon as I get a few hours on my own I try to get out with the camera, I don't need any other motivation that that thankfully :)

Boobs usually as a used to mostly shoot in the studio

Sometimes the same as Andy, if it earns money then I will go and do it.

But bank holiday monday was out of boredom, Worked Friday night, worked Saturday morning setting up for a wedding (not photography) and afternoon at the Reebok sunday morning dismantled the wedding and nothing Sunday afternoon due to the rain.

Not being out Sunday I was bored so decided no matter what I would be out shooting Monday, and it rained worse that Sunday but I still went out to the Three sisters race track and shot some bike and superlite racing.

If I have the time I will go out and shoot for pleasure

My Photo of the Day challenge is the only motivation I need  with today being my 466th consecutive day of taking at least a single photo  TP is a great support and inspiration with all the really talented photographers that are on here

Interesting thread :}

Usually when I want to try something new or am especially inspired by an idea. I tend to plan & arrange creative shoots. Often if the light looks pretty decent I'll grab my film SLR & a couple of rolls of black & white film, to stroll & just shoot pretty details. I might go out with my film camera around where my dad lives soon, just experiment with new films in gorgeous woods in bloom :}

I usually fly to places all over the world just to take some snaps (and to see the place of course)

My motivation is to just show where i have been, and capture the place in its glory

If i am just at home it will be seeing someone's work and wanting to try get something similar or learn how they captured their shot

An interesting question and interesting answers!

For me, I don't get out nearly enough. If I arrange to meet someone to take photographs together or when I go on holiday are nearly the only opportunities I get. The best camera is the one you have with you though, as they say, so I'm finding I'm taking a lot more on my P'n'S than I had anticipated since I've invested a lot in lenses.

Must find the time this week actually. So in answer to your question: this thread!

Usually just good light and warm weather for me!

My 100th post! =D

heartbreak, nights out that give me idea's meeting people how have recently taken up photographygood light and every now and then just because I feel like it

My trigger is having time. Looking at good shots keeps my motivation high and drives me to want to become a 'good' photographer.

Exercise, i didn't go out much, having the camera is now starting to get me out of the house.

My trigger is finding (or making) a window of opportunity to go and shoot. Before I became a parent, and before my current hectic job, I had a lot more time on my hands and was a lot more prolific. These days, it really is a case of booking a day off from work, or making sure my wife is OK spending the day with the little 'un. Don't get me wrong, I take plenty of snaps of the family, but for my 'serious' stuff, I've only had one day out so far this year.

Decent weather and light for me too. Not too worried about temperature, but the light is the key.

Atmospheric pressure changes, always having a camera of some sort with me and being in the right place at the right time (if unplanned)

:)

a) to get myself out of the office at lunch time rather than waste time playing on Interweb forums like this :)

b) I've been conducting a personal project documenting the construction of Renzo Piano's Shard skyscraper at London Bridge since it was not much more than a hole in the ground in 2009. I'd been looking for a long term photographic enterprise and I figured you don't get a chance to do something like this often in life, so I make an effort at least once or twice a week, sometimes more.

Heading for over 5,000 edited images taken over three years by the time it's externally complete in a month or two's time.

I've gotten to know the architects fairly well over the last thee years and they've pointed me in the direction of some useful publications. I've had it suggested to me on more than one occasion that I should look at turning it into a book. :suspect:

c) Bermondsey, the City and Wapping provide plenty of other photographic opportunities when I'm not doing that.

There is no trigger, there is only photo! And its constant, its being in work and wanting to be shooting, its out shooting and wanting it to be my work, its seeing and recording new things and places i go and people i meet, its loading a fresh roll, its recording memories, its adding to my keepers file, its the process, its the elation and frustration, its the flip of the mirror and the wind of the crank, its the learning, its the fact that to me its not about the gear anymore but the idea, its my supporting wife, its competition with my brother lol, its having others to look up to who don't look down on you, its all these things and more but most importantly its just the moving forward.

I have photographic on days, and off days. Just because the weather is nice doesn't necessarily mean i'll be out trekking 15 miles with the camera as sometimes it's just nice to wind down and relax with a cold beer or in the garden.
Other days I'm bouncing between walls with creative ideas and soon out the door exploring the moorlands, when inspiration comes I just go with the flow.

thats my biggest problem at the moment, im so busy at work i get to the weekends and i dont want to do anything

Lately it's been because I've been booked for a job.

However, just bought one of the Fuji X10's and it's reawakened the old fun bit of photography for me. :)

Waking up in the morning triggers me, photography is a passion and with any passion I do t think you need a trigger, you do it because you live and dream it!

Knowing I need to update my portfolio for when I apply to university this Winter & coming up with ideas for creative shoots. Gets me real motivated when I'm inspired & have ideas buzzing round my head!

most of the time it's work so I have to do it, whether I like it or not (I like it 99.9% of the time BTW :))

For personal work it's usually seeing something that inspires me, usually something that's well-lit that I can take inspiration from and apply to something I've had on my 'to shoot' list for some time.

As long as the forecast isn't for a dawn that is heavily overcast then then that is usually enough.
