Need some advice.....

I currently have 450d with the 18-55mm kit lens and 55-250mm.

I tested 5dmk 2 (friends) and the difference in the quality is amazing...

So I can't afford a mk2 just not going to happen...

So I was looking to either by the 24-105 L lens ready for a body replacement in the next year or so....or do I ditch the lot by a 7d with the 15-85mm.

really don't know what to do...

The quality you're seeing with the 5D2 is because its 'full frame' sensor is 2.5x the area of the one you have.

You can get a 7D and throw money at expensive lenses, but TBH you'll not see the big jump in quality without the full frame camera body to go with them.

Edit: it's not about lots of pixels

And its not always about full frame either....

Consider where your current kit is letting you down. Quality can be improved greatly from the boggo kit lenses for the 450d so you might consider that first. Its either that or £2500 on a 5d2 and a lens.

If I were you I would look at a constant f2.8 zoom, either the tamron or sigma 17-50 would be great and perhaps try a 50mm f1.8 to see how narrow depth of field changes the way you shoot. Think carefully before going full frame and getting lost in the complexity and cost.

I understand the 5d will produce a higher quality to a crop sensor. But I stuck his 24-105mm lens on the 450d thou I did get a better quality of shot anything on the 450d above iso 800 (most indoor shots) just look pants compared to the 5d...I was kind of hoping the 7d would be more on par with the 5d...

The only way to get better low light shots on your 450D is to use a bigger aperture lens, either an f2.8 zoom as above or a faster prime. The 7D certainly does low light noise very well for a cropper but it will still have more noise than the 5DII. The 7D will certainly be usable at 3200 and if very well exposed 6400 iso. I have no experience of the 60D but apparently the sensor is the same as the 7D so this should also hold for that camera- and its a hell of a lot cheaper.

You have 2 digic4 processors in 7 apparently helping to deal with noise much better than 60D

It won't be, because it cannot be. As I explained above - full frame captures more than double the amount of light. It has far more image data to play with, plus the lens has to work much less hard to deliver the same level of resolution, further increasing contrast, colour and sharpness - double win.

No crop format sensor, or lens, no matter how good, can bridge that gap.

I think it's to improve burst frame rates. I don't think the noise reduction is anything different between the two cameras. Compare them here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos60D/page11.asp Whilst the 7D does appear to underexpose compared to the 60D, I'd say they were about equivalent on noise reduction...

I was in the same situation as you a few months ago (450D with Kit lens). I eventually went for the 70-200 F/4 L IS and a 2nd hand 24-105 F/4 L to start with. It made an immense improvement on the 450D. I had never been happy with the sharpness of the shots I was getting but I was now getting much better quality and sharpness. A couple of weeks ago I purchased a 2nd hand 5D MKI from MPB Photographic and have noticed another leap in quality.

Next step will be to save for a 5D MKII (new or 2nd hand) at which time I will sell the 450D and keep the 5D as a backup.

Agreed. My understanding is that one processor takes a picture, then the other takes the next picture so the camera does not have to wait while the first processor deals with the the first picture.
