Yes
I have a 70-300mm, so that's covered and a very nice lens.

What's a good lens about £300 that can replace the stock 18-55mm? It's on a D3100

Thanks,

Yes thanks I'm reading up on that, trying to see if it fits Nikons. I'll also check out the Sigma 17-50mm I think

I have the Sigma 17-70 contemporary and am very impressed with it, just gives me that little bit of extra reach.

i have the tamron 17-50 VC that I used with my d3100 - great choice as said above. You wont regret it

Nikon 16 - 85mm VR is a cracking lens and an immaculate used one could be found withing your budget.

I wonder whether, in reality, one would see much difference in images shot with the 18-55 and 16-85? The extra range is a bonus, but it's still a slow lens and quite expensive.

True it's still fairly slow but the VR helps overcome that in some situations, obviously doesn't help with DoF though. I did the same upgrade and found the 16-85 is a bit sharper, this is backed up by reviews (I had to justify the expense so did a lot of research first). The extra length is very useful I find as a general lens, very versatile. Very good feel to it too, nice weight etc. I supplement it with a couple of primes for when I want a much narrower DoF but 95% of the time this lives on my camera. Used prices have dropped a bit recently too which is good. Really depends on what the OP is looking for.
