I am looking at possibly upgrading some of my kit for the summer, have taken on a wedding in October too so I'd like some better quality glass by then

I currently have;

2x Nikon D90's
2x MB-D80 grip
10x batteries
4 Sandisk eXtreme III cards

SB600
SB900

Nikon 10.5mm f2.8
Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 DC HSM
Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 Macro HSM
Sigma 24-70mm Macro EX DG
Nikon 50mm f1.8
Nikon 50mm f1.4 AF
Nikkor 60mm Micro f2.8
Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 Macro APO DG
Nikon 70-300mm VR

Also have a UV filter on all the lenses and a bunch of other filters (all screw fit)

I would like a longer zoom lens for birds and airshow shots, and maybe the odd bit of sports photography

In bold are the items I think are best to move on, what would you do?

Without knowing your budget it's hard to say but a couple that spring to mind are the 300mm F4 maybe with a teleconverter or some kind of Sigma 500mm zoom.

maybe get rid of the 50mm f1.8 and grab a 35mm f1.8 to fill the gap on the prime, replace the sigma 70-300 for a 70-200 f2.8.

I say keep hold of the SB600 and the sigma 17-70 for other uses. The SB600 can be backup of your SB900 and the 17-70 can be backup of your 24-70 if anything happens.

I could be shifting the items marked in bold tonight - need some dam funds :(

Lose them and buy the best lens you can, even if it means narrowing your collection down to one or two optics, just make sure they're the best performers in their field.

Main target is a 70-200 f2.8 but even s/h they are circa £1k

Personally-speaking, I'd flog all the lenses in the same range to be able to get the 17-55 f2.8 Nikon

Quality, not quantity - perhaps keep the Sigma 17-70 as a backup

OR do the same at 24-70 if you prefer that range.

To be honest, it's a great setup already!

Anyone know if Jessops do any discount in-store if you were making a "big purchase" ?

Heard of people getting a chunk knocked off with them before not sure if it was praise or waffle though

or have a look on www.mpbphotographic.co.uk ... Matts a member here so maybe able to sort you out something althou they deal with used equipment & you could part ex some of your gear towards any purchase. Plus they offer 6mths warranty as well.. Worth a try maybe

If it were my dilemma then I would sell all of the lenses with maybe the exception of the 55 - 300 vr and the 50mm f1.4.....a few of the batteries would go as well with maybe keeping 4 .

On the hit list for use with the D90 would be:

Tokina 11-16 f2.8
Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 DX
Nikkor 70-200 vr1 f2.8

Poss Nikkor 105 macro

Later Nikkor 300mm f4 AF-S

500mm lenses are not the ideal kit for him to use or lug around for a wedding. ;)

I'd look at getting a 70-200mm f/2.8 , Nikon or Sigma along with a shorter fast zoom something along the range of 18-55mm f/2.8 for use at the weddings and then use the money earned to look at getting some longer glass to play with in your free time.

The OP did say this though:

"I would like a longer zoom lens for birds and airshow shots, and maybe the odd bit of sports photography"

Update on the current kit - I have sold all but one of the lenses marked in bold in the OP

Got myself a Sigma 150-500mm OS just over a week ago - cracking lens and I've yet to get used to it :)

Still on the prowl for the Nikon 2.8's now as I have been gifted with some funds towards them
