Hey all :wave:

We are off on our holiday to Edinburgh next week.

If you know the city could you suggest where to go for togging opportunities? Want to get a feel for the city, but would also like to find some lesser known areas. Shooting a bit of everything :)

We are staying at the foot of the castle and will not have a car so staying in the city itself.

We are already booked in with EG and Inspire :D

well Edinburgh Castle is a must. It's been a while since I last went (pre togging) but can't remember if you can get some nice scenery photo's from Johnston Terrace (one way street running next to the castle)
 
Calton hill a short walk from the east end of princess street is a clasic view of Edinburgh at sunset. The hill itself also has Edinburgh's disgrace a Roman style monument that was never finished. The bridges over the railway station and princess street gardens are well worth a visit, again the gardens are where many clasic castle shots are often taken that often include the golden fountain at the far western corner of the park. The back side of the castle is not as often photographed but is just as impressive especially around sunset when the sun is behind it. The grass market area where they used to hang people is very photogenic and you have to get a photo of Grey Friers Bobby. All of these are a short walk from where you are staying. If your feeling more energetic walk to Arthurs Seat at the bottom of the Royal Mile, from the top it has some great views over the city and down the coast. The national musem has some great views also from its rooftop if its open, it was closed last time I was there. Or climb the Scots Monument. Edinburgh's rooftop architecture is often overlooked but quite amazing but you have to get up high to appreciate it.

Leith is a slightly longer walk but has the old docks and some short waterways for great reflections and interesting buildings and small bridges. I could go on and on as there is plenty to visit and lots of great locations, hope you enjoy your visit and post some photos when you get back.

The Forth road & rail bridges, although the rail bridge has had white scaffolding on it for quite some time. To follow up on Tom's suggestion of Leith, Ocean Terminal (shopping centre) is where you'll find Britannia. There's plenty parking and buses are regular. If you're going to Inspire anyway, might I suggest you ask EdinburghGary as I'm sure he'll have some great ideas.
 
Dont forget all the street entertainers I was tripping over them last week going from the station to get my hire car,and if you are able half an hour up the road is Falkirk and the stunning Falkirk Wheel (See My Flickr)
 
Also take a walk down the Mound to Hanover Street, keep heading north and and check out the New Town - Georgian Streets and Crescents - and some great art galleries and coffee shops and stuff. A stroll from the High Street towards the Meadows wouldn't go amiss either. Truth is....you're spoilt for choice. Enjoy.

Thanks nigel :) The OH has family in Falkirk! I am not sure yet if they are coming to see us in Edin or vicaversa! I will one day 'do' the wheel, preferably in a boat.
 
Botanical Gardens are worth a visit and there is a sizable graveyard at the west end of Princes Gardens with some good views of the castle. St Giles Cathedral on the royal mile I think it is £2 for a photo permit.

:naughty: I will try to get one. Hopefully we will be on foot for most of it so I wont be experiencing the receiving end!

btw ... Street entertainers are in short supply now ... festival is over ...

If you're here on Thursday the 16th then you'll get the chance to photograph the Pope and all the folk going to see him.

Bear in mind that it will be chaos that day as loads of roads are closed and parking suspended.

OO! We are indeed there! And thats the day for some Inspire magic with EG too!

Think I shall put that on our shot list - portrait with the pope :D
 
I was in Edinburgh last week - taking photos with my new camera!

Here's a list of some of my favourite spots:

Scottish Parliament building. Great for architectural detail (even if it isn't great architecture!)

Dunbar's Close Gardens - a secret garden just off the Royal Mile. Views up to Calton Hill

The view of Edinburgh Castle from the back room of the Elephant House Cafe (on George IV bridge), especially at sunset. It's supposedly the cafe where JK Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book, and the food's pretty good too:D

The floral clock in Princes Street Gardens. Hard to photograph because of the low angle but a nice challenge.

Greyfriars Bobby. Gotta be done!

Any of the steep-stepped alleyways that lead from the Royal Mile. Atmospheric and full of interesting details. I didn't get any good shots of them - we were there during the Fringe so there were far too many people around!

If you're into modern architecture there's a building called Our Dynamic Earth down by Hollyrood Palace. It's in front of Arthur's Seat which makes for an interesting composition.

And of course everything already mentioned - Edinburgh's such a photogenic city.



I'd really recommend getting a day ticket for one of the tourist buses that go from outside the station. The trip around the city is about an hour and really helps you get your bearings - then you can get on and off for the rest of the day. The tickets last for 24 hours from the time of purchase. There's four different routes, three just go around the city but I think the fourth has a longer route that takes in Leith and the Botanic Gardens as well.

Have a great time - we enjoyed Edinburgh so much that we're going back next year

If you are going down to Ocean Terminal (Brittania) head along to the east end of the docks. There you will see a Casino, just behind the casino are three redundant cranes which make a good subject.

Also while you are in that neck of the woods, if you head west from Ocean Terminal (approx 10min walk) you will come across Newhaven Harbour (where I took my TP day shot).

Just north of the city centre is the Botanic Gardens if your into shooting foliage/plants etc.

If you feel extremely adventurous and are at the Scottish Parliament you could always hoof it up arthurs seat (extint volcano) and get some nice panoramic/wide angle shots of the city.

Oh dear me no - I'm such a beginner! My snapshots (can't call them photographs, they're not that good) give me great pleasure but don't bear close inspection :suspect:

If you go to South Queensferry for the Road & Rail Bridges try Hopetoun House Estate which has lovely grounds and roaming herds of deer.
