What to photograph in rural areas ?

Know the feeling, flatlands of Cambridgeshire are deadly dull especially at this time of the year.
My answer is travel and plenty of it, use the boredom as a kick up the backside to get you going.

Pick some things you want to see and get planning, be surprised how many places can be reached on a day trip.
Just been putting together a photobook of this year's tour, some with the wife or friends, but lots on my own.

Already started for next year, Leeds on Jan 16th is the first then who knows, Shropshire is on the list as is the historic Kent Coast.
Rail tickets are cheap if booked well in advance, quite often first class which is handy when it provides breakfast and dinner enroute.

Yes I think I will go to Swansea soon, much more going on and more people.

Just like someone from a City wants to photograph countryside, I think I want to photograph a City hahahaahah

Good idea, Cardiff always looks interesting too, I'm from London and still visit regularly, countryside is overrated

Good. Tickets are booked. First Class both ways only £20 return from Liverpool(y)

Mine too, 23 quid first class return from Huntingdon, bargain

Cardiff? Now there's an idea. Might have to be an overnighter with the way trains are from up here. We'll talk about it.

It's not the landscape you want to focus on, it's light. Different weather and season will completely change a location and can make something mundane into something magic.

Indeed - have you any rivers around you GTG - this is one from today. Might not be the greatest execution, but a bit more interesting than the norm on a very bleak weather day

I guess there is a cure for empty beaches if you happen to be an artist who is good at long exposures.
Credit to Darren Pearson, he made loads of these all over the world and was featured in the DailyMail.

Not far from Newcastle emlyn but really out in the sticks.

I’m not far from Emlyn and never have a problem finding stunning landscapes.

Get down to Brechfa, into the Brecon, llangrannog, cardigan, Pembrokeshire coast, waterfall country, The river just below Henllan, Cenarth falls.

How long have you lived here?

All my life. It is good in a way, I can make endless pics of green, river and beach all day long.

And a Castle or two....

Ugly is in the mind, as is beauty!

Newcastle Emlyn is very picturesque, castles and old buildings. There is a farmers market there, that must offer some good people/street photos. Various waterfalls nearby and Fishguard offers sea and landscapes worth working at.

Look at other peoples photos, not necessarily in your area, to get ideas. I sometimes give myself a project, bridges or trees and work out what makes a good photo. Wildlife photos will give you a never ending source of subjects, which of course need a bit of work to engineer.................

Perhaps pick a subject that interests you, and work on it................

Do it...............

I'll confess that at the moment I'm in a bit of a photography black hole - I've lots of other stuff in my life that's sapping my enthusiasm for...well... pretty much anything other than eating, riding my bike and sleeping - haven't picked up a proper camera in more months than I care to think about. And, because I'm not "thinking images" I'm not seeing them. But, my "other stuff" will subside as soon as I get a job where I don't just go to and try and avoid throwing 3 out of 4 of my colleagues out of the nearest window, and I'll come back to photography, and get my mojo back again. Until then, I'm pretty much content to keep the camera kit in good nick, and wait for a respite...”

I know exactly what you mean - except in my case I’m not even sleeping or eating. Dangerously I’ve been indulging in retail therapy to try and lift my depression, I bought a used Canon 500mm f4 last week and I’m likely to follow up eos ff body next.....

Sometimes the biggest mistake is taking photos for the sake of taking photos. You end up disheartened. I only, well almost only take photos if the subject intrests me, so I don't really take that many. I watched a Thomas Heaton video the other week, he will go out for the best part of a day and only take one photo. He does a lot of research and goes with a plan in mind.
