Personally I'd go always for quality glass first over a body upgrade.
Glass prices go up, the price of bodies drops. Six months time the D300 will be a £700 (new) camera, but the 70-200 will probably have gone up to £1300....
Exactly what Flash said, only you don't have to wait six months for things to go up! It's seriously rumoured that come Jan. '09 and Nikon glass will be going up 15% .. that's at least another £175 for the 70-200VR.
Granted, even body's prices should increase, but generally the cost of a body goes down over time while glass doesn't.
Only think of the 70-300VR if you don't want to carry a 1.4kg lens with you. The weight, and size, of the 70-200VR is very substantial compared to that of 70-300VR.
is the body holding you back at all. I dont know the nikon cameras so cant pass judgement on them but you need to get what will benefit you more. The new body+ extra reach maybe more beneficial than quality of the 70-200..
If you are deadly serious about your photography, buy the 1000 quid lens. If you are wandering around taking photos of stuff (rather than a dedicated photoshoot outing) you might want the lighter glass and better all round performance of the body.
Alternatively, buy both and when you are bankrupt due to poor decision making the government will bail you out.... it works like that doesn't it?
GLASS, GLASS, GLASS!
Just purchased a 70-200vr 2.8 myself and even my wife can see the difference it makes on my humble D40 (waiting for my D300 to arrive).
Another bonus it gave me, is the fact that my brother now has lens envy
As others have said price of glass goes up and bodies go down.
