what to do with dvds/blurays

Other than hoarding them and taking up loads of space what's the alternative ? Has anyone got some special method of dealing with them. Im thinking along the lines of backing up to an external hard drive ( of sorts ) then chucking the others in the attic ?

I said id never go down the route of downloading music from the play store/itunes , turns out I really dont need to have the physical cd after all- especially as its so much cheaper
 
If you follow apple, the optical media is already dead. Others seem to follow soon, within 2-3 years. We'll see, but realistically we are heading digital only.
You might as well do what you plan to do.
 
I still don't use iTunes but play stores o.k cause you get to download the actual mp3 to do as you wish. So all I need is some ripping software and some large storage ? I did notice the tv had input for hdd .
 
Have a look at handbrake, to copy your dvd to a hd.
 
I use DVD Fab to start straight from the menu then I get rid of all the stuff I don't need - other languages, director's comments etc.

Then I copy it to external HDDs without shrinking it.

The I usually recode them into X-Vid to watch on my HD TV unless the original is so bad (noisewise etc) when I simply use Shrink 3.2 to turn it into a single .VOB file which I can then watch on my TV without interruptions.

I do this because I put a lot of films on a 500Gb HDD which plugs into the USB port on my TV.

So far I have about 10TB of films stored on external drives.

I'm in the same situation at the mo, i have 3 shelfs of DVD's at the mo and I'm going to be moving house shortly and I won't be able to justify the space. I think its time to get rid!

Ha ha ha. That picture looks very familiar !!! Thanks for all the tips with the software side og things. Can blurays be backed up as well then?
I dont really get bored of watching the same films. If there's nowt on the box, I'll have a rummage through my collection and stick it on instead.

as long as you have a blu-ray drive in your computer then yes. file sizes can be pretty large, but ripbot gets them down to 8-10gb depending on settings.
 
I only ever buy digital download music, but i do still like to buy DVD's, mainly because i can lend out and borrow DVD's off of friends and family, you can't do that with a digital download, it's also difficult to wrap a digital copy of a DVD for a Xmas/Birthday present :lol:
 
What is the legal situation with downloading from one of the dodgy sites films you already own a physical copy of?

No-one will care (indeed, it may not even be a tort under the CD&PA to make a backup), unless you then sell the disk and keep the copy.

Yup.

Like you say I doubt anyone will care if you've paid for the original and still have it in your possession.
