What to do with a kit lens once you've upgraded?

Hi all,
I recently upgrade from the orginal 18-55m kit lens that came with my 550d to a faster 17-50mm f2.8 Sigma. The Sigma is now my primary walkabout lens and never off the camera where as the kit lens hasn't left my camera bag in months. I have a longer zoom and a prime lens as well.

So my question is, other than sell it to pay for more camera stuff, is there anything else I could use if for? And if selling where is the best place to flog it?

If you intend selling the body in the near-ish future, keep it as it will probably sell better as a kit.

If you are happy with the body then sell the lens, once you've been here a little longer you can advertise in the classifieds here. You should get £50-60 for it if it's the IS version or £20-30 for the non-IS.

I would sell it. You tend to get more selling the lens and body seperately than together so not worth keeping for that reason.

I've found it to be the other way round and got better results selling as a kit rather than individual items. Its certainly a lot easier to sell together as its only one lot of postage and one payment to receive.
I guess it depends on the camera and lens.

Trouble with eBay at the moment though is that its full of scammers. Its also quite expensive as I think its at least 10% fee's.

Scammers aren't really an issue with selling items, as long as you follow eBay rules you are pretty well covered.

Sometimes, even with Paypal and eBay fees you can sell for more on ebay than you can get elsewhere. That was certainly the case with my last sale.

You both may have found that it is better to sell as complete. However, a quick look at sold items on eBay and it is clear that is is better to sell separately but then guessing you are not referring to eBay sales where it may be different?

Yes eBay takes 10% but the prices are more than 10% higher than selling elsewhere due to the huge target audience. Bit paranoid to worry about scammers and the fact is you are much better protected buying via eBay that via other means.

As for two sets of postage, just an opportunity to make a bit more as most people charge more for postage than it actually costs...

You can probably guess I use eBay quite a bit :)

eBay seems one of the few places that it doesn't matter about body only or kit, every forum and places like Gumtree ends up with "what lens is with it?" and them being offered £80 less for no lens.

Preaching to the converted ;), I have yet to find a quicker place to sell at a higher price than anywhere else seems to realise.

I had it last week, selling a 500D body, idiots offering stupid amounts on AV forums, not a single bite on here, nothing but scammers on Gumtree. After almost a week of trying I listed on eBay and and sold it in under 3 hours and made more than £50 more than I would have accepted here.

Thanks all for the advice.
I would love to upgrade the body but for the forseeable future I'll sticking with ths one. Also think the longer I hold onto the kit lens, the less it'll be worth.

Will try ebay but get payment via paypal to make sure I have the money in advance. Someone told me that setting the auction to finish on a Sunday evening gets you more as this is a peak viewing time.

Its clear cut for me......as you have a cheaper body then whoever buys it in the future will probably want a kit lens to go with it, as its the kind of thing a newbie buys. Now if it was a 7/5d then most will already have lenses to go with it or be buying expensive glass along with the body. I think you will defo regret selling it if you do. Take it from me, it wont be long before you have your eye on a 60/7D......

I'd keep it! Useful spare!

Yep. If you're not desperate for the wedge this is the correct answer.
