Its driving me crazy.

Ive only been taking photos for about a week, and i totally love it. I think im pretty good at it.

However im not sure what i want to photograph. The only thing ive done so far properly are bands. But im interested in wildlife, flowers and just general photography.

However i dont where to start!

Could someone give me some sort of assignment so ive got something to head for or something like that. Like maybe a small portfolio to create on a certain subject.

Theres only so much i can do with a 18-55 kit lens!

Thanks for reading.

You be suprised how much you can do with that lens ;)

Ok, an idea for an assignment.

See if you can post 10 photos on any theme, but it has to include the following types of images:

1. A Landscape (taken at 18mm if you want to make it more tricky)
2. A Close-up (not propper macro as that lens aint made for macro)
3. A Slow Shutter Speed shot. (at slow that 1 5th of a second)
4. A shot taken between f3-f5.6 (IE very shallow depth of field)
5. A shot taken with a very large depth of field
6. A low level shot (taken from very near to the ground)
7. A shot taken at night (preferably with some light trails)
8. A shot that features you in the shot in some way (maybe even just a shadow or something)
9. A shot taken looking directly at the sun
10. Free choice, but it has to make at least one person go "wow" :)

That is off the top of my head, so sorry if it rubbish :p

P.S I can give you a theme if you want too

Thanks a bunch for this. Very kind.
Would you give me a theme please?
Thanks again!

Oh and whats a Macro?

Macro is very close up phtography. You can get lenses that are made to focus on something very close. A lens like your will go out of focus if you get too close to something, but you can still get fairly close, and capture lots of the detail :)
(Explanation of macro Here )

As for a theme.....erm.

Hows about "Travel" ? Its a bit vague, but should work well with the list of shots I gave :)

Any other questions just ask :)

Ok excellent ill be right on this beginning tonight, i live in newcastle, so i might visit the nearby railway!

One more thing, what is depth? I know the meaning of the word, but i mean in a shot.

Thanks for your help.
Im such a nuisence.

Good depth of field explanation also on wiki Here It is basically how much of the image is in focus. Say you have something close to the camera and something far away. If you use an apparuture or say f22 you get a larger depth of field (IE more things will be in focus) if you use f3 you will only see a small area in focus. Its one of the tricky things to get your head around. But once you do it is really usefull for creating effective photos :)

Have fun playing around with the camera! and dont be nervous to just press buttons and see what it does.

Why don't you have a look at the 'fortnightly assignment' or the competition on here - that should give you some food for thought.

I tried there, do they rarely stick to it actually being fortnightly?

looks like it could be fun!
