Hi,
I have a 40D which I am happy with for my type of photography I do, sports, portraits and gigs. However it has let me down with err99 messages, the last one cost £60 to fix and it happened again last night at the end [fortunately!] of a friends band first gig. It would have been an unmitigated disaster an hour earlier. I have pot it back for repair but I am not sure I can trust it again. I have therefore decided to bite the financial bullet and by another camera.
The issue is I am, somewhat irrationally, not happy about buying another s/h one, so what should I buy.
Ah Budget!! <£1000 so I think that kind of leaves me with a 50D......? Unless someone has a better plan. I will keep the 40D as a back up I think and wouldn't be happy to sell it on in any event.
Lens wise I have 50m 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 24-70L, 70-200F4 L Sigma 150 EX macro and Sigma 10-20.

Thoughts appreciated.

Duncan

Depends how urgent you are, if you can hold on a few months I'd say wait for the 7D to come down to £1K mark, the way people have been talking it should handle the higher ISO way better tan a 40D, so should be an ace 'gig' camera, at least that's what I'm hoping :)

hi duncan,
out of interest, how old is the 40D ?
is it me or is this a problem we tend to hear about quite a lot from 40D owners / users.................

Must say I have been running a Pair of 40D's, one of them for well over a year and have not had a problem at all (probably will now that I have said that).

Ive heard of a few duff 40d's

I'm in the same position with my 30d

Must be a bug in that particular model.. then again the 40D is one of Canon's biggest sellers, so any problems will tend to be wider publicised.

Just so Nikon owners don't feel left out, the D80 has a bit of a reputation for errors too..

I don't mean to start another Canon/Nikon war, but it can happen to any model and manufacturer!

Had my 40D 25 months (approx 25000 shots), used it with 100-400 until I got my 50D then fitted the Sigma 18-200 (which was no problem on 20D). Then the error 99s started until 2 weeks ago it died. Lucky for me I bought it new from Jessops and it came with extra 2 year guarantee. Just recieved it back, the repair report said replaced faulty circuit.
A lot of people seem to have error 99 with their 40D, some say lens problems, others say shutter. To me for the number of people is seems a design or build error and Canon should have recalled the affected batch or all.

I did get the odd err99 message when I had the 40D, but it was usually using a converter. Otherwise no problems at all.

As for replacing the 40D, it's a no brainer with your budget Duncan - 50D!!

Hi, I am not sure but less than 10K clicks. It does seem to be an issue, err 99 apparently is the code for a communication error.

Hi Chaz,
Yes done all the usual suspects! Its just its my only camera, bought s/h and it now makes me nervous about its future reliabilty. After all its now back with a professional repairer, if they can't sort it what chance do I have?!

With the arrival of the 7D I suspect there will be a number of used 50D on here soon!! But is it enough of a step from the 40D?

Personally I would wait to see what the "60D" brings in the new year or better still start saving for a 7D!!!!
