Cooking again for rugby teams on Saturday but stuck for ideas. Don't want to do the bog standard chilli or curry and did Cottage Pie the other week, want to steer clear of stew as well

Anyone got any ideas?

Has to be easy to cook as we have lack of space and for less than £50 to feed 70/75

Spaghetti Bolognese is an easy one or a pasta bake. Or for really easy corned beef hash.

It's a bit short notice really to get the ingredients - but if there's another in the near future - why not go for a nice Japanese curry - rather than the traditional Indian style?

Some potato, onion and either beef or chicken added to the curry mix can make quite a tasty dish - and is very easy to prepare....

Makro do 5kg of chicken breast for £17 - so two of those, £34, £5 of potaoes, £3 onions - - plus curry mix (2x40 servings packs) £25, 10kg thai fragrant rice £12 - £79 total at a guess... A little over the budget - but would go down well :) Just over a £1 per person...

Japanese Curry

Thanks LadySue, pasta bake is an option, spag bol, not so much, very difficult to cook the spaghetti with the facililtes we have

cymruchris - thanks - really can't go over budget as I would have to pay out of my own pocket but nice recipe, might give it a go for just family

Paella? you could just doi it with chicken & chorizo to keep costs down, rather than splashing out on seafood.
Continuing the curry variations in the last post, a Thai Green or Red curry?
Some sort of Jambalaya?

I often do a big batch of minced lamb curry for the freezer and it's not like the usual 'club curry' that everybody expects. This is the recipe, just increase your quantities:

2lb of minced lamb
2/3 chopped onions
Garlic
3Tbsp curry powder
3 Tbsp tomato puree
3 Tbsp mango chutney
3 Tbsp malt vinegar
1/2 - 3/4 pint of stock
Frozen peas

Brown the lamb mince and in a separate pan fry the onions and garlic until soft then add the lamb, add the curry powder and cook for a couple of minutes to release the flavour and throw in the puree, chutney and malt vinegar. Give it a good stir and add the stock and peas before simmering although with a big batch I usually put it in the oven for a few hours to cook through.

Simples! :D

easiest thing in the world id thai green curry
tesco thai green curry paste
tesco chopped onions
tesco chicken breasts
brocolli
coconut milk
put the rice in with the curry 15 minutes before serving thickens up good and sticks to your ribs
lot less than £50

When I had to cook for a large group with limited facilities I did baked potatoes and did them at home, wrapped them in foil then put in oven at venue to keep hot with a selection of fillings - tuna with sweetcorn, baked beans, cheese etc. If you get a couple of boxes of those really big spuds this should keep you well within budget.

You could make what I had at a retirement do last week.

A big pan of 'tater ash.
A big pan of mushy peas.
tray of 'crust'
Big tub of pickled red cabbage

Heaven

A spit roast suckling pig so they can carve a slice off for themselves and crusty bread and butter to make a great sarnie.

Nowt wrong with curry or chilli. SWMBO used to cater for several teams (not rugby) and she used to get moaned at when she switched from the curry or chilli to something a bit more interesting! The only other thing that went down well with them was chicken pasta bake but that's a lot easier to do for 20 than it is for 70! Next thing to do is to put the match fees up so you can spend a bit more.

5 loaves of bread and 2 small fishes

Stovies! Lots of potato, some beef dripping, chopped up beef or corned beef n onion. Luvverly.

Haggis neeps and tatties!

Good luck finding a Haggis that far south. They don't roam wild south of the border!

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions, we've made a note of them all to use. We are going with Pasta Carbonara bake type thing.

There is nothing wrong with Curry or Chilli, you are right but the main complaint at the moment is "curry/Chilli...again!"

Thanks again :D

If they're complaining, give 'em a pinny and the keys to the kitchen - they're taking advantage!

just read to the bottom of the thread and you have chosen what i was going to say , plenty of scope for interest , lob some tuna and sweetcorn in is a good idea , pasta is cheap , make it tomato based with tins of chopped toms , if i was going to add anything i would see if i could cook up some sort of garlic bread to go as well

maybe another time as you have this one sorted.. up here it seems the thing to have mice pie/cornedbeef pie and mushy peas..

Me, hotdogs and a big mug of good homemade soup to wash it down with.
